Berroco Kyrie Crochet Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Kyrie is a crocheted cardigan designed by Alison Green, suitable for intermediate-level crocheters. This garment is worked from the bottom up and features an open front design with a gap closure. The cardigan is available in nine size options, ranging from 34½ inches to 66½ inches bust measurement, with finished lengths between 21 and 22¾ inches. The pattern is designed to be worn with 4–6 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Techniques Used

The Kyrie cardigan employs several key crochet construction techniques:

  • Bottom-up construction: The garment is built from the lower edge upward, allowing for easy length adjustments during the making process.
  • Worked flat: All pieces are crocheted in flat rows rather than in the round, which simplifies shaping and seaming.
  • Seamed assembly: Individual pieces (back, fronts, and sleeves) are crocheted separately and then seamed together to create the finished cardigan.
  • Lace stitch pattern: The garment features an openwork lace design that creates visual interest and a lightweight drape.

Stitches Used

The Kyrie cardigan is primarily constructed using a repeating lace pattern stitch that combines basic crochet fundamentals. The main pattern stitch uses double crochet (dc) stitches paired with chain stitches (ch) to create an open, airy fabric. The pattern stitch is worked as follows: alternating rows of [double crochet, chain 1, double crochet] groups separated by skipped chains, followed by rows of multiple double crochets worked into the chain spaces. This creates a structured yet delicate lace effect that repeats throughout the garment. The turning chains (ch 3) count as the first double crochet in each row, maintaining consistent stitch counts across the piece.

Materials: Yarn and Tools

The Kyrie cardigan is designed to be made with Berroco Remix Light yarn in the colorway #6965 Plum. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 3 balls (300 grams) for the smallest sizes to 5 balls (500 grams) for the largest sizes. Each ball of Berroco Remix Light weighs 100 grams.

The pattern calls for a size D / 3.25 mm crochet hook to achieve the specified gauge of 7 (double crochet, chain 1, double crochet) groups and 9 rows equaling 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the pattern stitch. Stitch markers are recommended to help track pattern repeats and shaping throughout construction. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure accurate finished measurements and proper fit.

Pattern Details

This intermediate-level pattern uses US crochet terminology and is presented as a downloadable PDF. The design includes multiple size options organized in three groupings to accommodate a wide range of body measurements. The front opening features a deliberate gap closure measuring between 5¾ and 6¾ inches depending on size, creating an elegant open-front cardigan silhouette. The pattern is authored by Alison Green and published by Berroco, Inc.
