Berroco Lake Arrowhead Tee: Knitted Lace Summer Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Lake Arrowhead Tee is a lightweight, short-sleeved knitted sweater designed by Leah B. Thibault from Berroco's Portfolio Vol. 5. This intermediate-level project creates a fitted tee with a finished bust measurement range from 38 inches to 55½ inches, offering eight size options to accommodate various body types. The garment features approximately 5–7 inches of ease for comfortable wear, making it suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece during warmer months.

Construction Technique

The Lake Arrowhead Tee is constructed using a bottom-up approach worked in the round, a popular method that minimizes seaming and creates a seamless fabric. The pattern begins with flat-worked hems that are then joined in the round to form the body. The sleeves are split from the main body piece, and shoulders are shaped using short-row shaping for a custom fit. After the body and sleeves are completed, the shoulder seams are joined using a three-needle bind off, a technique that creates a strong, secure seam while binding off simultaneously. Stitches for the sleeve and neck ribbing are picked up after seaming and worked in the round to finish these edges.

Stitch Patterns and Lace Details

The primary design feature is the Little Arrowhead Pattern, a four-round repeating lace motif that creates the distinctive textured appearance of the garment. This pattern is worked in the round and repeats over a multiple of 6 stitches. The stitch sequence includes:

  • Round 1: Knit 1, yarn over, slip-slip-knit decrease, knit 1, knit 2 together, yarn over—repeated around the entire round
  • Round 2: Knit all stitches
  • Round 3: Knit 2, yarn over, centered double decrease, yarn over, knit 1—repeated around
  • Round 4: Knit all stitches

These four rounds form the complete pattern repeat. The yarn overs and decreases (slip-slip-knit, knit 2 together, and centered double decrease) create the characteristic lace openwork that gives the tee its visual interest and breathability. The alternating knit rounds allow the lace pattern to develop clearly without additional complexity.

Yarn and Materials

This project uses Berroco Remix Light, a lightweight yarn supplied in 100-gram balls. The yardage requirement ranges from 2 to 3 balls depending on the size selected, with the sample shown in size 40½ inches using 2 balls in colorway #6971 Cameo Pink. Remix Light is an ideal choice for lace knitting, as its light weight allows the delicate pattern to display beautifully while maintaining excellent drape.

The needles required include 32-inch circular needles in sizes 4 (3.50 mm) and 5 (3.75 mm), with the larger size used for the main lace pattern and the smaller size for ribbed edges. A 16-inch circular needle in size 4 is used for the neck ribbing. A spare size 5 needle is needed for the three-needle bind off at the shoulders. Additional notions include 2 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and either stitch holders or waste yarn for holding stitches temporarily.

Gauge and Fit Considerations

The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches when working the Little Arrowhead Pattern on the larger needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit, as variations will significantly affect the finished bust and length measurements. The pattern notes that checking gauge before beginning is strongly recommended to avoid sizing issues. Length measurements range from 25¼ inches in the smallest size to 28¼ inches in the largest size, providing options for different proportions.

Skill Level and Pattern Features

Rated as an intermediate-level project, the Lake Arrowhead Tee requires familiarity with circular needle knitting, lace techniques, and shaping methods. Knitters should be comfortable with yarn overs, various decrease techniques, and working in the round before attempting this design. The short-row shaping at the shoulders adds complexity beyond basic garment construction, making this an excellent project for advancing knitters seeking to develop their technical skills while creating a wearable summer garment.
