What Is Being Made

The Berroco Larue is an intermediate-level cardigan designed by Amy Christoffers. This garment features a reversible construction that allows it to button up either the center back or front, offering versatile styling options. The finished cardigan is available in eight sizes ranging from 32" to 60" bust measurements, with lengths between 21" and 23½" depending on size selection. The design includes approximately 2–4" of ease for comfortable wearing.

Construction Techniques

This cardigan is worked seamlessly in one piece using the flat knitting method. The garment construction divides into back and front sections, with the back featuring a textured pattern stitch while the front is worked in stockinette stitch. This mixed-stitch approach creates visual interest and demonstrates intermediate knitting skills. The reversible nature of the design means both sides are finished and wearable, eliminating the need for traditional seaming on the main body.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Larue employs two primary stitch techniques:

• Stockinette Stitch (St st): Used on the front panels, this fundamental knit stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric appearance
• Pattern Stitch: A four-stitch repeat with alternating knit and purl columns creates textured interest on the back sections. This pattern stitch is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches plus 4 additional stitches, alternating between knit and purl combinations across rows

The pattern also incorporates specialty stitches including Left Twist (LT) and Right Twist (RT) techniques for added detail and shaping.

Materials and Gauge

The Larue is designed to be worked with Berroco Pima 100, a 100% pima cotton yarn. Yardage requirements range from 4 hanks for smaller sizes to 7 hanks for the largest size. The pattern shown features color #8452 Lavender.

Construction requires two circular needles in sizes 4 (3.50 mm) and 7 (4.50 mm), along with two double-pointed needles in size 4 for specialized sections. Additional notions include stitch markers, a stitch holder, and 5–6 one-inch buttons depending on size.

Achieving proper gauge is essential: 20 stitches and 27 rows equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needle, while 27 stitches and 27 rows equal 4 inches in the pattern stitch on the larger needle. The pattern emphasizes checking gauge before beginning to ensure accurate finished measurements.
