Berroco Liftie is a fun yet practical hat that even teens and tweens may actually wear with its relaxed style. This cozy hat begins with the I-cord ties and increases to work each earflap flat before stitches are cast on to create the body of the hat and work the remainder of the project in the round. Berroco Dash is a thick, plush yarn that blends Merino wool with a touch of nylon for strength and sports ‘dashes’ of color splashed along the length of neutral background colors. Berroco Liftie Knit Hat

What is Being Made

The Berroco Liftie is an intermediate-level knit hat designed by Brenda York. This seamless knit hat features decorative ties and earflaps, making it a practical and stylish accessory. The hat is available in two finished sizes: approximately 18½ inches (47 cm) and 21 inches (53.5 cm) around the head, with a height of 8 inches (20.5 cm) not including the earflaps.

Construction Techniques

The Liftie employs a thoughtful combination of knitting techniques to create its distinctive design. The construction begins with I-Cord ties that are worked flat on double-pointed needles, establishing the decorative elements of the hat. The earflaps are worked flat separately using increases to shape them, then strategically joined to the body of the hat. Once the earflaps are attached, the body of the hat is worked in the round using circular needles, creating a seamless construction that minimizes finishing work. This mixed approach of flat and circular knitting allows for both structural integrity and design flexibility.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Liftie uses fundamental knitting stitches suitable for an intermediate skill level. The primary stitch throughout is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric. Shaping is accomplished through knit front and back (kfb) increases, which are used to expand the stitches from the I-Cord ties into the earflaps and to shape the hat crown. The pattern includes stitch markers to track the beginning of round (BOR) and maintain pattern accuracy during circular knitting.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Liftie is designed to be worked with Berroco Dash yarn, a worsted-weight yarn requiring only 1 ball (100 grams) of yarn in the colorway #3858 Andes. The needle requirements include a 16-inch circular needle in size 11 (8 mm) for the main body and crown of the hat, a set of double-pointed needles in size 11 (8 mm) for working small circumferences as the crown decreases, and 2 double-pointed needles in size 10 (6 mm) for the I-Cord ties. The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches and 22 rounds per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on the larger needles, measured after blocking. Additional notions include stitch markers and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
