Product Description
Berroco Lovage is a long-line cardigan knit in 2 halves with garter stitch from sleeve
cuff to center back. A deep curved hi-low hem dips down the back. The sleeves
and the upper section of this women’s sweater are knit sideways, starting at
the cuffs and joining at the center back with a 3-needle bind off. The lower
body is picked up around the entire piece and worked down. The collar is then
picked up around the front pieces and neck edge. Berroco Sesame is a colorful
self-striping yarn with a subtle sheen. The fibers take the dye differently,
producing a marbled effect. Worsted weight Sesame is machine-washable and a fantastic
choice for Lovage.

Berroco Lovage Cardigan
What is Being Made
The Lovage is a seamed cardigan designed by Amy Christoffers, available in six sizes with finished bust measurements ranging from 40" to 60". This intermediate-level knitting project features a classic cardigan silhouette with approximately 2–6" of ease built into the design. The finished length varies by size from 22" to 24", making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various body types and style preferences.
Knitting Techniques
This cardigan is worked flat on straight needles and features seamed construction, meaning the front and back pieces are knitted separately and then sewn together. The pattern incorporates shaping at the shoulders and neck, requiring intermediate-level skills in garment construction and fitting. Knitters should be comfortable with reading multi-size patterns and executing tailored shaping techniques to achieve professional results.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The Lovage features a distinctive pattern stitch that repeats over a multiple of 3 stitches plus 4. This stitch pattern creates visual texture through a combination of techniques:
- Purl rows for foundation and definition
- Double yarn wrapping around the needle for dimensional effects
- Slip stitches with dropped wraps to create gathered or bunched texture
- Knit three together decreases combined with yarn overs for openwork elements
- Stockinette stitch for body sections, providing a smooth, classic finish
The pattern stitch section is worked for 15 rows, followed by stockinette stitch sections that comprise the main body of the garment. This combination of textured and smooth knitting creates visual interest while maintaining wearability.
Yarn and Materials
The Lovage is designed to be knitted with Berroco Pima 100, a 100% pima cotton yarn. Yardage requirements range from 4 hanks for the smallest size to 6 hanks for the largest size, with the yarn shown in colorway #8412 Phlox. The pattern requires two sets of straight needles—size 5 (3.75 mm) for ribbing and edgings and size 7 (4.50 mm) for the main fabric—allowing for proper gauge and fabric density. Additional notions include a 16" circular needle in size 5 (3.75 mm) for neckline finishing, one stitch holder for managing stitches during shaping, and two stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in pattern stitch when worked on the larger needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for garment fit and is particularly important in a seamed cardigan where accurate measurements determine how pieces align during assembly.
