Product Description

Berroco Margherita is a simple but stylish women’s pullover knit in super bulky Coco. The body and sleeves are knit in the round from the bottom up to the underarms, and the pieces are joined to work the yoke, making Margherita easy to finish with just two seams needed at the underarms. The beautiful colors of Coco provide a variegated look to the sweater. Margherita is a great first sweater choice for beginning knitters.

Berroco Margherita Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

The Berroco Margherita is an easy-level knit sweater designed for beginners. This garment features a classic pullover construction with set-in sleeves and a fitted yoke. The sweater is available in seven sizes, ranging from 38½" to 62½" bust circumference, with finished lengths between 17½" and 20¾" depending on size. The design offers 2–4" of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit suitable for everyday wear.

Techniques Used

The Margherita employs several fundamental knitting techniques that make it ideal for knitters developing their skills. The garment is worked in the round from the bottom up, which eliminates the need for seaming the body and sleeves until the yoke is joined. This method creates a seamless appearance on the body and sleeves while they are being constructed. Once the body and sleeves reach the underarm, all pieces are joined together and worked in the round to create the yoke shaping. The sweater uses a seamed construction method for joining the yoke pieces, combining the efficiency of circular knitting with traditional seaming techniques where necessary. This hybrid approach teaches knitters both modern and classic methods while keeping the project manageable for beginners.

Stitches Used

The Margherita uses straightforward stitches appropriate for a beginner-level project. The ribbing at the lower edge is created using a simple two-row repeat: K1, P3 alternating with K2, P1, K1. This creates an elastic, fitted edge that helps the sweater maintain its shape. The main body and sleeves are worked in stockinette stitch (St st), which means knitting every round when working in the round. Stockinette stitch creates the classic smooth, V-textured fabric that is the foundation of most sweater designs. The ribbed cuff measures 2" and transitions smoothly into the stockinette body.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Margherita calls for Berroco Coco yarn, a worsted-weight fiber available in the colorway #4906 Shore. Yardage requirements range from 700 grams (7 balls) for the smallest size to 1,300 grams (13 balls) for the largest size, with each ball weighing 100 grams. The pattern requires two sizes of circular needles: size 11 (8.00 mm) for the ribbed cuff and size 15 (10.00 mm) for the main body. Circular needle lengths needed are 16" and 29". Additionally, double-pointed needles in both sizes 11 and 15 are required for working the sleeves in the round. The pattern also calls for 4 stitch markers (with one in a contrasting color to mark the beginning of the round) and 2 stitch holders to temporarily hold stitches. The recommended gauge is 10 stitches and 14 rounds per 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles, making it essential to knit a gauge swatch before beginning the project to ensure proper fit.
