Berroco Medellin Cardigan: Knitted Seamed Cardigan Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Berroco Medellin is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Amy Christoffers. This garment is constructed as a two-piece cardigan with finished bust measurements available in multiple sizes: 36", 40", 44", 48", 52", 56", and 60". The cardigan features a length range from 21½" to 24½" depending on size selected. The design incorporates approximately 4–6" of ease for comfortable wearing, making it suitable for layering and everyday wear.

Construction Technique

The Medellin cardigan is worked flat on circular needles rather than in the round, and uses a distinctive two-piece construction method. Both the right and left sides are started at the sleeve cuffs and worked toward the center back. The two pieces are then joined at the center back using a three-needle bind off, a seaming technique that creates a strong, finished edge. After the main body pieces are joined, the front edges, neck opening, and cuff edges are finished with an applied I-Cord, which adds a polished, decorative border to these key areas.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) — the primary stitch pattern forming the main fabric of the cardigan
  • Increases — M1L (make one left) and M1R (make one right) increases are used strategically to shape the sleeves, creating a gradual widening from cuff to underarm
  • Three-Needle Bind Off — a seaming technique used to join the two cardigan pieces at the center back
  • I-Cord — applied as edging on front, neck, and cuff areas for a finished appearance

Yarn and Materials

This pattern calls for Berroco Mykonos yarn in color #8541 Hestia. Yardage requirements range from 8 to 15 hanks (50 grams each) depending on the size being knitted. Berroco Mykonos is the recommended yarn for this design, and substituting alternative yarns may affect the final garment's appearance and fit.

The needles and notions required include a 29" circular needle in size 6 (4.00 mm) for the main body work, a spare circular needle in size 6 (4.00 mm) or smaller for holding stitches, and two double-pointed needles (dpns) in size 3 (3.25 mm) for the I-Cord edging. Waste yarn is needed to temporarily hold stitches during construction.

Gauge and Fit Considerations

The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 31 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements, and knitters are advised to check gauge before beginning the project. The cardigan is designed with 4–6" of positive ease, meaning the finished bust measurement will be 4–6" larger than the wearer's actual bust measurement, allowing for comfortable movement and layering.

Skill Level

This cardigan is rated as an intermediate knitting project, suitable for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to tackle garment construction, shaping, and finishing methods such as applied I-Cord and three-needle bind off.
