Berroco Menorca Crochet Sweater

What is Being Made

The Menorca is a crocheted tee designed by Amy Christoffers. This intermediate-level garment is constructed using geometric square motifs that are joined together to create a seamless, lace-textured pullover sweater. The design features five finished size options ranging from 36 inches to 72 inches in bust measurement, with corresponding length measurements between 18 and 22½ inches, making it suitable for various body sizes with positive ease recommendations of 2–6 inches.

Construction Technique

The Menorca employs a bottom-up construction method, beginning at the lower body edge and working upward. The sweater is worked in the round using joined motifs rather than traditional rows, creating a seamless garment with minimal finishing required. Triangle motifs are worked and joined along the bottom edge to establish the foundation of the body. Additional motifs are then joined in rows, with the sides deliberately left unjoined to create sleeve openings. The construction concludes by joining one row to both the front and back pieces to form each shoulder, eliminating the need for seaming.

Stitches and Lace Details

This pattern utilizes treble crochet stitches as a primary stitch element, as evidenced by the foundational chain-4 and treble crochet instructions in the pattern. The design incorporates a small cluster stitch (abbreviated as Sm cl), which is created by working multiple yarn-overs and pull-throughs to build texture and visual interest. The lace construction is achieved through the geometric arrangement of square motifs, which when joined together create an openwork fabric characteristic of lace crochet. The pattern specifies that gauge is measured after blocking, with one completed square measuring 3¼ by 3¼ inches, or 8.5 by 8.5 centimeters.

Yarn and Materials

The Menorca pattern calls for Berroco Splash yarn, a yarn weight suitable for this project. The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 6 hanks to 15 hanks of the 50-gram weight, with the color shown in the pattern being #2412 Moab. A size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook is recommended, or a hook size that achieves the specified gauge. The pattern emphasizes the importance of checking gauge after blocking to ensure accurate finished measurements, as individual tension and blocking can affect the final dimensions of the garment.

Skill Level and Pattern Format

This is an intermediate-level pattern, suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with joined motifs and understanding construction techniques. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing crafters to access the complete instructions digitally. The Berroco pattern includes detailed finished measurements, gauge information, and construction notes to guide makers through the process of creating this seamless, lace-textured crochet sweater.
