Product Description

Berroco Mia is a lovely child’s shawl-collared, open-front raglan cardigan knit in Sesame. This must-have piece is knit flat in one piece to the underarms, divided for back and fronts. The sleeves are worked flat, and the collar stitches are picked up around the front and neck edges. The sleeves are then seamed to the body. Berroco Sesame is a colorful self-striping yarn with a subtle sheen. The fibers take the dye differently, producing a marbled effect.

Berroco Mia Children's Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Berroco Mia is a children's cardigan designed by the Berroco Design Team, available in five sizes ranging from children's size 2 through size 10. The finished cardigan features a classic button-front closure with a collar, offering chest measurements from 25 inches to 33 inches and lengths from 13½ inches to 21 inches, making it suitable for growing children. The cardigan is shown in size 10 in the pattern documentation.

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up approach, meaning knitters begin at the lower edge and work upward toward the shoulders. The body is worked flat on circular needles rather than in the round, allowing for a traditional seamed construction. The pattern notes that the body is worked in one piece to the underarms before being divided for the back and front sections, creating a seamless transition at the waist. Sleeves are also worked flat and subsequently seamed to the body. The collar is picked up around the front and neck edges and worked in one piece, adding a finished neckline detail.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch – Used for the ribbed lower edge, creating a textured, elastic band that measures between 3 and 4 inches depending on size
  • Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch for the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric

Materials and Gauge

The Berroco Mia is knitted using Berroco Sesame yarn in the colorway #7451 Pomelo. Yardage requirements range from 3 balls (100 grams each) for the smallest sizes to 5 balls for size 10. The pattern requires circular needles in sizes 6 (4 mm) and 8 (5 mm), with the smaller needles used for the garter stitch ribbing and the larger needles for the stockinette stitch body. Waste yarn is needed to hold stitches during construction. The recommended gauge is 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles, measured after blocking. Knitters are advised to check gauge carefully before beginning to ensure accurate finished measurements. The pattern recommends approximately 2 to 4 inches of positive ease for a comfortable fit.
