Product Description

Timeless style meets cozy comfort in Berroco Morel, a cabled crewneck vest that will keep you warm and looking put together with ease. Talara is a worsted weight baby llama yarn that has a luxurious feel and a chainette construction that’s perfect for adding warmth without extra weight. Morel is knit in the round from hem to underarms where the back and front are each knit flat to finish before being seamed at the shoulders. Ribbed trims are picked up and worked in the round at the neckline and armholes to add a clean finish to your finished vest. Pair Morel with anything from tees and leggings at home to buttondowns and dress pants for work, and be comfortable and cozy wherever you need to be. Cable pattern is charted only.

Berroco Morel Knit Vest

What Is Being Made

The Berroco Morel is an intermediate-level knit vest designed by Åsa Buchta. This sleeveless garment is available in twelve sizes, ranging from 35¼ inches to 70½ inches in bust measurement, with finished lengths between 20½ and 25½ inches. The vest is shown in the 44¾-inch size and is designed with 2–4 inches of positive ease for comfortable wear.

Construction and Techniques

The Morel vest is constructed using a bottom-up approach, beginning with cast-on stitches at the lower edge. The garment is worked in the round using circular needles until the underarms, where it is then divided and worked flat in rows for the back and front sections. The pattern incorporates seaming to join pieces together. Cable work is a featured design element, requiring the use of a cable needle throughout the project.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The primary stitch pattern is charted and worked in Pattern Stitch, which is measured at a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rounds over 4 inches when worked in the larger needle size and after blocking. The pattern includes cable techniques that add textural interest to the vest. Stitch markers are used to track the beginning of round and pattern repeats, with one marker in a different color designated for marking the beginning of round.

Materials and Needles

The Morel vest is knitted using Berroco Talara yarn, a luxury fiber available in color #7308 Suri. Yardage requirements range from 5 to 12 balls of 50-gram weight, depending on the finished size selected. The project requires 32-inch circular needles in sizes 7 (4.5 mm) and 9 (5.5 mm), plus a 16-inch circular needle in size 7 (4.5 mm) for finishing ribbed edges. Additional notions include a cable needle, stitch markers, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction.
