Berroco Muesli Cardigan

What Is Being Made

The Berroco Muesli is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Brenda York. This garment is available in multiple sizes ranging from 36" to 72½" bust circumference, with finished lengths between 21½" and 25" depending on size selection. The cardigan features a classic construction with positive ease of approximately 2–4" for comfortable wear.

Construction and Techniques

The Muesli cardigan is worked flat in separate pieces and then seamed together, following a bottom-up construction method. This approach allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and make adjustments as needed. A distinctive feature of this pattern is the two-strand yarn technique: one strand of Berroco Lanas Light is worked together with one strand of either Berroco Aerial or Berroco Aerial Color throughout the entire project. The two strands must be color-matched, pairing the main colors together and the contrast colors together to create a cohesive, blended appearance.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The cardigan is worked primarily in Pattern Stitch, which is knitted using the larger needles (size 6 / 4 mm). The gauge for this pattern stitch is 22 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches after blocking, making accurate gauge checking essential for proper fit. Ribbed edgings are created using the smaller needles (size 5 / 3.75 mm), providing structure and definition to the neckband and other finished edges.

Materials and Yarn

The Muesli cardigan offers flexibility with two yarn options, both using a two-strand combination:

  • Berroco Lanas Light Option: Requires 3–4 balls of #7801 Cream (main color) and 1–3 balls of #78108 Spring Green (contrast color), depending on size. Each ball weighs 100 grams.
  • Berroco Aerial Option: Requires 3–6 balls of Berroco Aerial Color #34100 Monet (main color) and 2–5 balls of Berroco Aerial #3467 Pine (contrast color), depending on size. Each ball weighs 25 grams.

The two-strand construction creates a richer, more textured fabric while allowing for creative color blending between the main and contrast shades.

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires circular needles in sizes 5 (3.75 mm) and 6 (4 mm). A 32-inch circular needle in size 5 is used for neckband work. Additional notions include 4 removable stitch markers or waste yarn for tracking pattern repeats and construction points. Gauge should be measured after blocking to ensure accuracy before beginning the project.
