Product Description

Berroco Novi is a fabulous ribbed women’s pullover knit in Arno. This sweater is worked from the bottom up seamlessly to the underarm. The front and back are divided and then rejoined at the shoulder. The sleeves are picked up and then worked down to the cuffs. Arno from Berroco is a fantastic blend of cotton and Merino wool, perfect for cool weather sweaters and accessories. Arno has a gorgeous sheen and soft hand with an interesting construction—the wool fibers are blown into a cotton mesh tube, resulting in lighter than air fabrics with unbelievable warmth.

Berroco Novi Seamless Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

The Novi is a seamless, bottom-up knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This intermediate-level garment is worked in the round from the hem upward, creating a polished, professional finish without seams. The sweater is available in nine sizes, ranging from a 39¼" bust (extra small) to a 71¼" bust (3X-large), with finished lengths between 23¼" and 32" depending on size selection. The design features a classic silhouette with recommended positive ease of 6–8 inches for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Techniques Used

This sweater employs several key knitting techniques that contribute to its seamless construction and polished appearance:

  • Bottom-up construction: The sweater is knit starting from the lower body edge and progressing upward toward the neckline, allowing knitters to try on the garment and adjust length as needed.
  • Worked in the round: Using circular needles and double-pointed needles, the entire garment is knit circularly, eliminating the need for seaming and creating continuous, even fabric.
  • Ribbed cuff detail: The body begins with a k1, p2, k1 ribbed pattern that measures 3 inches from the cast-on edge, providing elasticity and a finished appearance at the hem.

Stitches Used

The Novi incorporates two primary stitch patterns:

  • Stockinette stitch (St st): The main fabric of the sweater body, created by alternating knit and purl rounds to produce a smooth, classic knit texture.
  • Ribbing (k2, p2): Used for the cuff and collar sections to create elastic, fitted edges that hug the body and prevent rolling.

The gauge for stockinette stitch is 20 stitches and 28 rounds per 4 inches on the larger needle, while the ribbed sections measure 22 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches on the larger needle. Checking gauge before beginning is essential for achieving accurate finished measurements.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The Novi is designed to be knit with Berroco Arno, a yarn that comes in 50-gram balls. The pattern calls for the colorway #5098 Salt & Pepper. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 8 balls for the smallest size to 19 balls for the largest size, making this an accessible project for various yarn budgets.

Needles: The pattern requires a combination of circular needles and double-pointed needles in two sizes:

  • Size 4 / 3.5 mm circular needles (32" and 16" lengths) and double-pointed needles for working ribbed sections and smaller circumferences
  • Size 6 / 4 mm circular needles (32" and 16" lengths) and double-pointed needles for working the main stockinette stitch fabric

Additional notions include 2 stitch markers, 1 stitch holder, and a small amount of waste yarn for holding stitches during construction. The pattern recommends using the exact yarn specified to ensure proper gauge and finished garment dimensions.
