What is Being Made

Construction Techniques

The Phillipa sweater employs a bottom-up construction method, meaning the garment is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward toward the shoulders. The body is worked in the round using circular needles until the underarm point, where the piece is then divided for the back and front panels. From this division point forward, the garment is worked flat on the circular needles, treating them as straight needles. The Phillipa sweater is knitted using Berroco Zinnia yarn, a worsted-weight yarn sold in 50-gram balls. The main color (MC) is #7146 South Sea, with yardage requirements ranging from 5 to 11 balls depending on the size selected. The contrast color (CC) is #7144 Gulf Stream, requiring 2 to 4 balls depending on size.

The recommended needle size is a 32-inch circular needle in size 7 (4.5 mm), or whatever size is necessary to achieve the correct gauge. The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Additional notions required include one stitch marker and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction.

Sizing and Fit

The sweater is designed with positive ease, meaning the finished bust measurement is intentionally larger than the wearer's actual bust measurement.
