Berroco Pinarello Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

The Berroco Pinarello is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This garment is available in eight sizes, ranging from a 38-inch bust measurement up to 76 inches, with finished lengths between 20½ and 25 inches. The sweater is shown in the 44-inch size and is designed with 6–10 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction and Techniques

The Pinarello is constructed using a distinctive side-to-side working method, which means the sweater is knit in two separate sections that each begin at the sleeve cuff and extend toward the center back. This construction approach creates unique shaping and visual interest in the finished garment. Once both sections are complete, the back seam is grafted together using the Kitchener stitch, a seamless joining technique that creates an invisible seam. The fronts are twisted once and then grafted together before being sewn to the back, combining both grafted and seamed construction methods for a polished finish.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The primary stitch pattern used throughout the Pinarello is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a V-shaped texture on the right side. The garment is worked flat on circular needles rather than in the round, allowing for the side-to-side construction technique. Stitch markers are used during construction to help track pattern sections and shaping points. Both stitch and row gauge are emphasized as critical for achieving accurate finished measurements.

Yarn and Materials

The Pinarello pattern calls for Berroco Splash yarn, a worsted-weight yarn sold in 50-gram hanks. The yardage requirement varies by size, ranging from 8 hanks for the smallest size up to 19 hanks for the largest size. The pattern sample shown is worked in colorway #2413 Sedona. Knitters will need a 36-inch circular needle in size 6 (4 mm) for the main fabric, a 24-inch circular needle in size 4 (3.5 mm) for ribbed sections, and a spare circular needle in size 6 (4 mm) for holding stitches. A size E (3.5 mm) crochet hook is also required. Additional notions include two stitch markers, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and grafting, and waste yarn for temporarily holding stitches during construction.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 27 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needle. The pattern notes emphasize that both stitch and row gauge are very important for success, and gauge should be measured after blocking. Taking time to check gauge before beginning ensures accurate finished measurements and proper fit.
