What is Being Made

Pippa is a sophisticated knit shawl and wrap designed by Donna Yacino from the Cotolana Fall 2017 Collection. This two-panel construction creates an elegant accessory measuring approximately 19" wide by 62" long after blocking, not including fringe. The finished piece is a versatile wrap suitable for layering and draping.

Construction Technique

This wrap is constructed using a bottom-up, seamless, worked-flat approach. The design begins with a narrow panel that serves as the foundation, followed by picking up stitches along one edge to create a wider panel. This method eliminates the need for seaming while maintaining clean, professional finishing throughout the garment.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The pattern features a distinctive repeating stitch pattern worked over a multiple of 4 stitches plus 1. The core technique combines several fundamental knitting stitches to create visual interest:

• Knit stitches (k) form the basic structure
• Yarn overs (yo) create decorative openwork and lace elements
• Knit 2 together (k2tog) decreases for shaping
• Slip, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over (sl 1, k2tog, psso) creates centered decreases

Construction Sequence

The Narrow Panel is cast on with 33 stitches and worked even in the pattern stitch for 62 inches, maintaining consistent gauge throughout. Once the narrow panel reaches the desired length, the bind-off row is worked on the right side using a specialized bind-off technique that mirrors the pattern stitch structure. The Wide Panel is then created by picking up and knitting 369 stitches along one side edge of the completed narrow panel, then working even in the same pattern stitch for 14¼ inches before binding off using the same specialized technique.

Finishing and Fringe

The wrap is completed with a fringe detail added to the cast-on edge of the narrow panel. Fringe strands are cut to 11 inches in length, with five strands grouped together for each fringe element. A crochet hook is used to insert and secure the folded fringe through the cast-on edge stitches, adding movement and visual interest to the finished wrap.

Materials and Tools

This project requires Berroco Cotolana yarn in the colorway #3523 Balsam, with 9 balls (50 grams each) needed to complete the wrap. A 29-inch circular needle in size 9 (5.50 mm) is used for the main knitting, while a size I/9 (5.50 mm) crochet hook is needed for attaching the fringe. The gauge is 23 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches when measured after blocking, making this an intermediate-level project.
