What is Being Made

The Berroco Remi is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Donna Yacino. This garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from 36" to 68" bust measurements, with finished lengths between 22" and 24½". The pattern is shown in a size 40" bust with recommended positive ease of 2–4" for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Technique

This sweater is constructed using a bottom-up seamed method, meaning the pieces are knit from the lower edge upward and then sewn together. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for traditional row-by-row construction of individual pieces that are later assembled.

Stitch Pattern and Stripe Work

The Remi features a distinctive Pattern Stitch that creates visual texture and interest throughout the garment. This stitch pattern repeats over a multiple of 4 stitches plus 5 edge stitches and alternates between two rows:

• Row 1 (Wrong Side): Purl across
• Row 2 (Right Side): K2tog, then repeat [k1, yo, k1] all in the next stitch, sl 1, k2tog, psso to the last 3 stitches, finishing with [k1, yo, k1] all in the next stitch, SSK

The pattern incorporates horizontal stripes worked in a repeating color sequence: 2 rows in the main color (MC), 2 rows in the first contrast color (C1), 2 rows in the main color again, and 2 rows in the second contrast color (C2). This stripe sequence is repeated throughout the garment as directed in the pattern instructions.

Yarn and Materials

The Remi is designed to be knit with Berroco Remix yarn, a worsted-weight option. The yarn requirements vary by size: smaller sizes require 4 balls of the main color, while larger sizes need up to 8 balls. One ball each of two contrast colors is needed for all sizes. The pattern specifies three colorways: #3919 Mist for the main color, #3901 Birch for the first contrast, and #3903 Almond for the second contrast.

Needles and Gauge

Knitters will need size 8 (5 mm) needles for the main pattern work, with size 6 (4 mm) circular needles also required—these are 16" needles used for ribbing or other sections requiring a tighter gauge. Additional notions include waste yarn for holding stitches and one stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats.

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 21 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in the Pattern Stitch, with an alternative gauge of 17 stitches and 23 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished sweater meets the intended measurements.
