Berroco Rest & Reset Beck Knitted Toy

What Is Being Made

Beck is a soft, cuddly knitted toy designed by Mel Kennelly. This finished stuffed companion measures approximately 8½ inches across by 10 inches high after stuffing, with separate ears and legs that attach to the main body. The toy is perfect for anyone seeking a comforting, handmade cuddle buddy crafted with premium materials.

Craft and Technique Overview

This is a knitting project suitable for advanced beginners and those with foundational knitting skills. The construction method is straightforward and efficient: the main body is created as a seamless tube worked in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming the primary structure. Separate ear and leg pieces are knitted flat, then attached to the completed body tube during finishing. This modular approach makes the project manageable while producing a three-dimensional stuffed toy.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) — The primary stitch throughout the project, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Cast on and bind off — Standard edge techniques for starting and finishing knitted pieces
  • Embroidery stitches — Double straight stitches for eyes, satin stitch for the nose, and outline stitch for facial details

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Berroco Pima Soft in colorway #4632 Cantaloupe (1 ball of 50 grams). This premium pima cotton yarn provides a soft, durable base ideal for a toy that will be handled and cuddled frequently.

Needles and Notions:

  • 16-inch circular needle, size 6 / 4 mm (or size needed to achieve correct gauge)
  • Stitch marker for tracking the beginning of rounds
  • Black embroidery thread and tapestry needle for facial features and finishing
  • Small amount of polyester fiberfill for stuffing

Gauge and Finishing Details

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. Checking gauge before beginning ensures the finished toy will be the correct size. The body tube is worked until it reaches 10 inches from the cast-on edge, then bound off. Ears are created by casting on 20 stitches and working 6 rows of stockinette stitch. After stuffing the body and securing the seams, facial features are embroidered using black thread to bring Beck to life with personality and charm.
