Shawl is worked flat from short edge to short edge with attached fringe.
Designed by Brenda York
The Chodron is a beginner-friendly crochet shawl designed by Brenda York. This rectangular wrap measures approximately 16½ inches wide by 62 inches long (not including fringe), making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping. The shawl features an elegant shell stitch pattern that creates texture and visual interest throughout the piece.
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The construction begins with a foundation chain and uses a repeating shell stitch pattern as the primary structural element. The shawl is worked in rows, building length through consistent repetition of the shell motif. Fringe is added as a finishing detail along both short ends of the shawl, created by folding strands of yarn and securing them through chain spaces and between shells.
The Chodron pattern relies on basic crochet stitches:
Yarn: The pattern calls for Berroco Gaia yarn in the colorway #3026 Dawn. Nine balls of 50 grams each are required to complete the shawl. Berroco Gaia is a versatile yarn choice that works well for shawl construction.
Hook: A size G / 4 mm crochet hook is recommended, or a size that achieves the specified gauge. Hook size may be adjusted to obtain proper gauge.
The pattern specifies a gauge of 4 shells and 9 rows measuring 4 inches / 10 centimeters in the shell pattern stitch. Gauge is measured after blocking. Checking gauge before beginning the project is essential to ensure the finished shawl meets the intended dimensions.
The Chodron begins with a foundation chain of 73 stitches. The set-up row establishes the shell pattern by creating shells in alternating chain spaces, with single double crochets anchoring the edges. Subsequent rows repeat the shell pattern across the width of the shawl until the desired length of 62 inches is achieved. The straightforward row-by-row construction makes this an excellent beginner project.
Once the main body is complete, fringe is added to both short ends of the shawl. Five 10-inch strands of yarn are folded in half and secured through chain-3 spaces on the foundation chain and between shells on the opposite end. After fringe is applied, all yarn ends are woven in and the shawl is blocked to shape and measurements.
