Berroco Sabyn Cape

What is Being Made

The Berroco Sabyn is a sophisticated knitted cape designed by the Berroco Design Team. This garment is a seamless, button-front cape that combines elegant draping with functional closures. Available in three sizes to fit bust measurements from 34" to 68", the Sabyn features a center panel construction that creates a refined silhouette. The finished length is 26 inches including the lower edging, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions.

Techniques Used

The Sabyn is constructed using a bottom-up, seamless, worked-flat approach. This method allows knitters to build the cape from the lower edges upward while maintaining a single continuous piece without seaming. The garment is worked flat on circular needles rather than in the round, which provides flexibility in shaping and construction. The design incorporates strategic shaping at the front neck and back neck areas to create the cape's distinctive silhouette. Eight 1-inch buttons are integrated into the design, allowing for adjustable front closure and adding both functional and decorative elements to the finished piece.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout the Sabyn is Stockinette Stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a refined appearance. This fundamental knit stitch is worked consistently across all panels, providing an elegant canvas that showcases the yarn's texture and color. The straightforward stitch pattern makes this an accessible intermediate-level project, as the focus remains on shaping and construction rather than complex stitch techniques.

Materials

  • Yarn: Berroco Tiramisu in colorway #9205 Espresso. The yardage requirements vary by size: 11 balls for the smallest size, 16 balls for the medium size, and 19 balls for the largest size. Each ball weighs 50 grams.
  • Needles: A 32-inch circular needle in size 8 (5 mm) or the size needed to obtain proper gauge
  • Notions: Eight 1-inch buttons for front closures and four stitch markers to assist with construction and shaping

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch, measured after blocking. Achieving accurate gauge is essential for proper fit and finished measurements. The back center panel measures 20, 28, or 34 inches depending on size selection, while the overall length remains consistent at 26 inches across all sizes. Blocking is recommended to set the stitches and ensure the cape drapes properly.

Skill Level

Rated as Intermediate difficulty, the Sabyn is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction. The pattern requires understanding of basic shaping techniques, including bind-offs and decreases at the neck edges, as well as the ability to work from written instructions and manage multiple stitch counts across different size options.
