Berroco Skagen Shawl

What Is Being Made

The Berroco Skagen Shawl is an elongated asymmetrical triangle shawl designed by Paula Emons-Fuessle from Portfolio Vol. 5. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished piece measuring approximately 75 inches across the top and 15 inches wide at its widest point, making it a generous wrap suitable for layering or draping.

Construction Method

This shawl is worked flat on a single circular needle, beginning from one tip and expanding into a triangle through strategic increases. One stitch is added at the end of every right-side row, allowing the piece to grow gradually and evenly from its starting point. The flat construction method makes this project accessible for knitters who prefer working on circular needles without joining in the round.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Lace knitting: An easy lace section creates a wavy border that adds decorative detail and a romantic, sea-inspired aesthetic to the finished shawl
  • Stockinette stitch (St st): Forms the primary fabric of the shawl body
  • Garter stitch: Bands of Garter stitch are worked throughout the body, alternating with Stockinette stitch sections
  • Stitch increases: Consistent increases at row ends shape the asymmetrical triangle form

Stitch Details

The body of the shawl is constructed primarily in Stockinette stitch and Garter stitch. Each Garter and Stockinette section consists of 10 rows, creating a rhythmic pattern throughout the piece. After the second Garter Ridge, the stitch count becomes a multiple of 5 stitches, providing a helpful checkpoint for knitters. The lace section that follows is straightforward, consisting of just one row with partial repeats that fill out the spaces at each end of the row, making it approachable for intermediate-level knitters.

Materials Required

Yarn: Berroco Remix Light in colorway #6919 Mist. One 100-gram ball is used for the entire shawl, though the pattern notes that almost the entire ball is consumed. Knitters uncertain about yardage are advised to purchase a second ball as backup.

Needles and Notions: A 24-inch or longer circular needle in size 7 (4.50 mm) is required, or a size that achieves the specified gauge. Optional stitch markers (11 recommended) help mark lace repeats for easier pattern tracking. A locking stitch marker or safety pin marks the right side of the work. A tapestry needle is needed for finishing.

Gauge

The required gauge is 18 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch and Garter stitch. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished shawl meets the specified dimensions.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace work and shaping techniques.
