Product Description
Berroco Soca Knit Sweater
What Is Being Made
The Berroco Soca is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Amy Christoffers from Booklet #406. This intermediate-level garment features a modern construction method with finished bust measurements available in six sizes: 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, and 56 inches. The sweater length ranges from approximately 20 to 25 inches depending on size, offering a versatile fit suitable for various body types and style preferences.
Construction Techniques
The Soca employs a sophisticated bottom-up construction method combined with seamless knitting worked in the round, creating a garment with minimal seaming and a polished finish. The pattern uses a unique yoke-based design where the front and back yokes are worked separately as semi-circles from the center bottom outward. This approach allows for precise shaping and fit customization. Once the yokes are complete, sleeves are knitted separately and then sewn to the yokes. A neckband is subsequently picked up from the yoke and worked in ribbing for a finished neckline. The lower body is picked up from the completed yokes and worked downward, creating a cohesive, well-integrated garment structure.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Soca incorporates several key knitting stitches to achieve its design. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, worked flat and in the round depending on the garment section. Lace elements are integrated throughout the design, created using yarn overs (yo) to form decorative openwork patterns. Ribbing is used for the neckband finish, providing elasticity and a professional edge. Increases are strategically placed using yarn overs to shape the yokes, while decreases using knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (SSK) techniques control the silhouette and create the garment's fitted proportions.
Materials and Tools
This pattern calls for Berroco Estiva yarn, a premium fiber choice that requires 2 to 3 cakes (150 grams each) depending on the finished size. The yarn color used in the sample is #2612 Curry, providing a warm, earthy tone to the finished sweater. Knitters will need 24-inch circular needles in sizes 9 (5.50 mm) and 10 (6.00 mm), allowing for proper gauge control and seamless construction. A stitch marker is essential for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections. The recommended gauge is 14 stitches and 20 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needle when measured unstretched, making accurate gauge swatching critical for achieving proper fit and finished measurements.
