Product Description

Berroco Soriada is an A-line pullover knit from the bottom up in the round with textured rib detail on the hem and sides, then echoed on the raglan lines. Arno from Berroco is a fantastic blend of cotton and Merino wool perfect for cool weather sweaters. Arno has a gorgeous sheen and soft hand with an interesting construction—the wool fibers are blown into a cotton mesh tube, resulting in lighter than air fabrics that have incredible warmth. The lace pattern is in chart form only.

Berroco Soriada Seamless Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

The Soriada is a women's pullover sweater designed by Alison Green and featured in Berroco Book #408. This intermediate-level knitting project is worked seamlessly from the bottom up in the round, creating a garment with a clean, professional finish and no seaming required. The sweater is available in eight sizes, ranging from 32" to 60" bust measurements, with finished lengths between 22" and 25½", offering versatile options for different body types and style preferences.

Techniques Used

The Soriada employs several key knitting techniques that characterize its construction:

  • Seamless, worked-in-the-round construction: The entire sweater is knitted circularly using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric from cast-on to completion.
  • Bottom-up assembly: The body is worked first from the cast-on edge upward, followed by the sleeves, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and straightforward pattern following.
  • Ribbed cuff detail: The sweater begins with a 3" ribbed section at the hem, combining purl and knit stitches to create elasticity and a finished edge that hugs the body.
  • Side detail shaping: Strategic placement of purl stitches creates vertical detail lines along the sides of the sweater, adding visual interest and structure to the garment.
  • Increases for shaping: Graduated increases are worked at regular intervals to shape the sweater body, with increase frequency varying by size to accommodate different proportions.

Stitches Used

The Soriada utilizes fundamental knitting stitches executed with precision:

  • Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout the body, created by alternating knit rounds with purl rounds when working flat, or continuous knit rounds when working in the round. This creates the smooth, classic fabric base.
  • Ribbing: A combination of purl and knit stitches worked in repeating patterns (P1, K3 and P1, K1) to create the elastic cuff at the hem and throughout the design.
  • Purl stitches: Used strategically as side detail lines to create vertical texture and visual definition within the stockinette background.

Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions

Yarn: The pattern calls for Berroco Arno, a yarn weight that requires 20 stitches and 32 rounds to measure 4" in stockinette stitch on the recommended needle size. Yardage requirements range from 7 to 15 balls (50 grams each) depending on the finished size, with the sample shown in size 40" worked in colorway #5006 Frost. This gauge and yardage range indicates a worsted or medium-weight yarn suitable for creating a fabric with good drape and durability.

Needles: The pattern requires multiple needle sizes to accommodate different sections and gauges:

  • 16" circular needle in size 7 (4.50 mm) for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections
  • 29" circular needle in size 7 (4.50 mm) for the main body, worked in the round
  • 16" circular needle in size 6 (4.00 mm) for ribbed edgings where a tighter gauge is desired
  • One set of double-pointed needles in size 7 (4.50 mm) for sleeve cap shaping and closure

Notions: Stitch markers are essential for tracking the beginning of rounds and marking side detail positions. The pattern specifies using one marker in a different color to clearly identify the beginning-of-round position, helping prevent mistakes during the many rounds of circular knitting.

Skill Level and Construction Notes

Rated as an intermediate project, the Soriada is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working in the round with circular needles and managing multiple stitch markers. The bottom-up, seamless construction method is particularly forgiving, as it allows knitters to try on the garment during construction and make adjustments before completing the sleeves. Attention to gauge is emphasized in the pattern instructions, as accurate gauge ensures the finished measurements match the schematic and the sweater fits as intended.
