What is Being Made

The Spruce Head Stole is a knitted wrap designed as an elegant accessory measuring approximately 20 inches wide by 82 inches long. This intermediate-level project creates a lightweight, lace-adorned stole suitable for layering and draping, making it a versatile addition to any wardrobe.

Techniques Used

This stole is constructed using bottom-up knitting, meaning the piece is worked from the cast-on edge upward to the finished length. The design incorporates lace knitting techniques throughout, creating openwork patterns that add visual interest and reduce weight. The stole is worked flat on straight or circular needles, allowing for easy manipulation of the increasing stitch counts and pattern repeats across the width.

Stitches Used

The Spruce Head Stole features a sophisticated Herringbone Lace Pattern that repeats across the body of the stole. This stitch pattern utilizes fundamental lace-knitting stitches including:

• Yarn overs (yo) – creating the characteristic openwork holes in the lace
• Knit stitches (k) and purl stitches (p) – forming the textured edges and pattern structure
• Slip, slip, knit (SSK) – a left-leaning decrease used to balance the yarn overs
• Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease creating directional shaping
• Slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over (sl 1, k2tog, psso) – a centered double decrease for more dramatic shaping within the lace pattern

The pattern is based on a multiple of 38 stitches plus 11 additional stitches, with stitch markers used to clearly delineate the pattern repeats and edge sections. The Herringbone Pattern works over 12 rows, creating a cohesive repeating design across the full width of the stole.

Materials

This project requires Berroco Remix Light yarn in the colorway #6903 Almond. Three 100-gram balls of this yarn provide sufficient yardage to complete the full 82-inch length. The yarn is worked on size 7 (4.50 mm) needles – either straight or circular needles are suitable for this flat-worked design. Two stitch markers are needed to track pattern repeats during knitting.

Gauge and Finishing

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. The gauge is measured over the 38-stitch by 12-row Herringbone Pattern repeat, which should measure 9 inches wide by 1¾ inches high when blocked. Knitters are advised to swatch and block before beginning the main project to ensure the finished stole meets the intended dimensions and drape.
