Product Description

Built for ultimate warmth and comfort, Berroco Tartufo is a tunic-length pullover with a split hem, dropped shoulders, and a deep funnel neck that dials up the coziness factor. Your project begins with the knit-flat ribbed hems which are joined together to work the remainder of the body in the round to the underarms. The back and front are completed separately and seamed at the shoulders with sleeve stitches and neckband stitches picked up and worked in the round to finish. Talara yarn ensures that your sweater will be soft, warm, and have a luxurious yet lightweight feel thanks to its chainette construction and baby llama fiber. Tartufo is the quintessential cozy sweater, perfect for pairing with leggings for a go-to outfit anytime comfort is key—its effortless style is just icing on the cake!

Berroco Tartufo Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

The Berroco Tartufo is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Åsa Buchta. This pullover garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from 37¾" to 69¾" bust circumference, with finished lengths between 28¼" and 31¾". The sweater is designed with approximately 4–8" of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Method

The Tartufo sweater is constructed using a bottom-up approach with a combination of flat and in-the-round knitting techniques. The front and back hems are worked separately in flat knitting, then joined together to work the body in the round. After the body reaches 19" from the cast-on edge, stitches are divided at the underarms to work the back and front pieces separately, allowing for armhole shaping and proper garment structure.

Knitting Techniques

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques suited to intermediate-level crafters:

  • Worked flat: The hem sections are knitted flat on circular needles before being joined
  • Worked in the round: The main body is knitted circularly for seamless construction
  • Seamed construction: Sleeves and other components are seamed together for a finished appearance
  • Stitch division: Stitches are strategically divided at underarms to transition between in-the-round and flat knitting for shaping

Stitches Used

The primary stitch used throughout the Tartufo is Stockinette Stitch (St st), which creates the classic smooth, V-patterned fabric characteristic of many knit sweaters. This fundamental stitch is worked over the entire garment and is the basis for the gauge measurement.

Yarn and Materials

The Tartufo is designed to be knitted with Berroco Talara yarn in colorway #7339 Ica. Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 10 to 19 balls of 50-gram weight, depending on the chosen size. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rows per 4 inches when measured in Stockinette Stitch using the larger needles after blocking.

Needles and Notions

This pattern requires multiple needle sizes and types to accommodate different sections of the sweater:

  • 32" circular needles in sizes 7 (4.5 mm) and 9 (5.5 mm) for the main body
  • 16" circular needle in size 7 (4.5 mm) for working the neckline
  • Double-pointed needles or preferred small-circumference needles in sizes 7 (4.5 mm) and 9 (5.5 mm) for sleeve caps or other small sections
  • Stitch markers, including one in a contrasting color to mark the beginning of round
  • Waste yarn for holding stitches temporarily during construction

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate, the Tartufo is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle projects involving multiple construction techniques, gauge precision, and shaping. The combination of flat and in-the-round knitting, along with stitch division and seaming, makes this an excellent project for developing advanced knitting competencies.
