Berroco Turmeric Seamless Knit Sweater

Garment Overview

Turmeric is an intermediate-level seamless knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This pullover features a sophisticated top-down construction with a shaped yoke, offering a modern fit with approximately 8 inches of positive ease. The sweater is available in nine sizes, ranging from 36 inches to 68 inches bust measurement, with finished lengths between 22 and 24 inches down the center back.

Construction Techniques

This garment employs a seamless, top-down construction method, meaning the sweater is knit beginning at the neckline and progressing downward toward the hem. The yoke shaping is accomplished using short-row techniques, which create a customized fit across the shoulders and upper chest. The body and sleeves are worked in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric. Pockets are worked flat and incorporated into the design.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout Turmeric is Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a defined V appearance on the right side. The pattern includes garter stitch detailing in the pocket sections, worked as alternating knit and purl rows to create texture and stability.

Yarn and Materials

Yarn Requirements: The pattern calls for two complementary Berroco yarns held together throughout the project. Berroco Ultra Wool Handpaint in colorway #33302 Cider (C1) is the primary yarn, requiring 5 to 10 balls depending on size, with each ball weighing 100 grams. Berroco Aerial in colorway #3435 Goldenrod (C2) is the accent yarn, requiring 4 to 8 balls depending on size, with each ball weighing 25 grams. Both yarns are held together as one strand to create the finished fabric.

Needles and Notions: Knitters will need circular needles in both sizes 7 (4.5 mm) and 8 (5 mm), including 16-inch and 32-inch lengths for working the body in the round. A set of double-pointed needles in both sizes is required for working the sleeve caps and cuffs when the stitch count becomes too small for circular needles. One stitch marker is needed to track the beginning of rounds, and waste yarn should be available to temporarily hold sleeve stitches.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 17 stitches and 26 rows per 4 inches in Stockinette stitch on the larger needles with both yarn colors held together. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining accurate finished measurements. The pattern includes a special note to prevent color pooling by alternating between two balls of C1 every two rounds, ensuring an even color distribution throughout the sweater.

Design Details

Turmeric features two pockets worked separately and incorporated into the body of the sweater. The pockets are cast on using both yarn colors held together on smaller needles, beginning with a purl row followed by a knit row to create a finished edge. The combination of Berroco Ultra Wool Handpaint and Berroco Aerial creates a rich, textured appearance with warm golden and cider tones.
