Berroco Veery Infant Dress

What Is Being Made

The Berroco Veery is a seamless infant dress designed by Amy Christoffers, available in five sizes ranging from newborn (0–3 months) through toddler (18–24 months). The finished measurements span chest/waist widths from 18 inches to 21 inches and lengths from 14¼ inches to 19¾ inches. This garment features a classic two-part construction with a fitted bodice and a flowing skirt, making it an elegant option for infants and young toddlers.

Construction and Techniques

The Veery employs a bottom-up construction method with a combination of worked flat and worked in the round techniques. The bodice is worked flat in Garter stitch from the waist upward to the neckline, with shoulders subsequently sewn together. After the bodice is complete, bands are picked up along the side edges to create finished edges. The skirt portion is then picked up along the cast-on edge of the bodice and worked downward in the round, creating a seamless, continuous fabric from the waist down.

This hybrid approach combines the simplicity of flat knitting for the structured bodice with the efficiency of circular knitting for the skirt, resulting in a garment with minimal seaming and a professional finish.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The bodice is worked entirely in Garter stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. Garter stitch is formed by knitting every row when working flat, producing a dense, stable fabric ideal for a fitted bodice that requires structure and durability for infant wear. The skirt transitions to Stockinette stitch when worked in the round, creating a smooth, classic fabric that drapes beautifully. The pattern also incorporates stripe techniques, utilizing four coordinated colors from the Berroco Comfort line to create visual interest and depth throughout the garment.

Materials

The Veery is designed to be knit with Berroco Comfort yarn, a practical choice for infant garments. The yarn requirements vary by size: smaller sizes (0–3 months, 3–6 months, and 6–12 months) require 1 ball each of the four colors, while larger sizes (12–18 months and 18–24 months) require 2 balls of the main color (Slate, #9784) and 1 ball each of the three accent colors. The four Berroco Comfort colors specified are:

  • Slate (#9784) — the primary color
  • Fig (#9797) — accent color 1
  • Jadeite (#9709) — accent color 2
  • Marigold (#9799) — accent color 3

Knitting needles required include both 16-inch and 24-inch circular needles in size 8 (5.00 mm), or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Additional notions include a size 4.00 mm (G) crochet hook, one stitch marker, one stitch holder, and one ½-inch button. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 40 rows per 4 inches in Garter stitch, and 18 stitches and 24 rounds per 4 inches in Stockinette stitch.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction. The combination of flat and circular knitting, along with color changes and shaping techniques, requires comfort with multiple fundamental knitting techniques and the ability to follow detailed shaping instructions.
