What is Being Made

The Berroco Vilamoura is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This pullover garment is available in multiple sizes ranging from 37 inches to 71½ inches bust measurement, with finished lengths between 22 inches and 26 inches. The sweater is shown in a size 37-inch bust and features a sophisticated lace pattern throughout the body.

Construction Method

The Vilamoura sweater is constructed using a bottom-up approach with seamedworked flat on straight needles in the pattern stitch, creating individual panels that are later joined together. After the main body pieces are completed, the shoulders are sewn together using a seaming technique. The neck and armhole edges are then picked up and worked in the round using circular needles to create finished edges. Finally, the side seams are sewn to complete the garment.

Stitches and Techniques Used

This sweater features a beautiful lace pattern as its primary design element. The pattern stitch is a multiple of 3 plus 4 stitches and includes the following key techniques:

• Knit and purl stitches forming the base of the pattern
• Yarn overs (yo) creating the openwork lace effect
• Decrease stitches worked as k3tog (knit 3 together) to balance the yarn overs
• Make one increases (M1R and M1L) used for shaping the garment during construction
• Worked in the round techniques applied to the neckline and armhole finishing

The pattern repeat creates an elegant lace texture that repeats every 4 rows, with increases strategically placed to shape the sweater body.

The gauge for this sweater is 25 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in Pattern Stitch on the larger needles, measured after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for accurate finished measurements.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern provides eight different finished bust sizes: 37, 40½, 44½, 48½, 52, 56, 60, 63½, 67½, and 71½ inches. The recommended positive ease is approximately 4 to 8 inches, meaning the finished sweater should measure 4 to 8 inches larger than your actual bust measurement for a comfortable fit. Corresponding lengths range from 22 inches to 26 inches, allowing for various proportions and preferences.
