Berroco Waverly Knit Sweater

What is Being Made

The Berroco Waverly is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Amy Christoffers. This pullover garment features a fitted silhouette with finished bust measurements ranging from 35 inches to 65½ inches across eight size options, and finished lengths from 22 inches to 25 inches. The sweater is designed with 6–8 inches of positive ease for a comfortable fit.

Construction Techniques

The Waverly employs a combination of modern knitting techniques to create a seamless, well-fitted garment:

  • Bottom-up construction: The sweater is knit beginning at the lower body and progressing upward toward the shoulders.
  • In-the-round knitting: The body is worked in the round to the underarms using circular needles, which eliminates side seams and creates a seamless tube.
  • Flat knitting: After the underarms, the body is divided and worked flat for the back and front pieces to accommodate armhole shaping.
  • Short-row shaping: Shoulders are shaped using short rows, a technique that creates gradual increases or decreases without visible steps, resulting in a refined shoulder line.
  • Three-needle bind off: Shoulders are joined using the three-needle bind off method, a professional finishing technique that creates a strong, invisible seam.
  • Stranded colorwork: The sweater incorporates stranded knitting, a technique where multiple yarn colors are carried across the back of the work to create color patterns.
  • Pick-up and knit: Sleeve stitches are picked up around the armholes and worked in the round from the top down, allowing for seamless sleeve caps.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout the Waverly is stockinette stitch (St st), a fundamental knit stitch that creates a smooth, classic fabric with a V-pattern appearance on the right side. The gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches on the larger needles in stockinette stitch. Stranded colorwork sections incorporate the stockinette stitch base while carrying multiple colors to create the color pattern.

Yarn and Materials

The Waverly is designed to be knit with Berroco Providence yarn, a worsted-weight yarn sold in 50-gram balls. The pattern calls for four coordinating colors:

  • Main Color (MC): #1106 Roger Williams (5–9 balls depending on size)
  • Contrast Color 1 (CC1): #1130 Cliffwalk (1–2 balls)
  • Contrast Color 2 (CC2): #1132 Fox Point (1 ball)
  • Contrast Color 3 (CC3): #1116 Atlantic (1 ball)

The pattern requires two sets of circular needles—a 32-inch needle in sizes 4/3.5 mm (smaller) and 6/4 mm (larger)—plus a 16-inch circular needle in size 4/3.5 mm for working the neckline. One set of double-pointed needles in both sizes is also needed for the final stages of sleeve cuffs. Additional notions include stitch holders, removable and regular stitch markers, and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction. Gauge is critical for this pattern and should be verified before beginning.
