Berroco Whist Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Berroco Whist is an unisex cardigan designed by Åsa Buchta, available in multiple sizes ranging from 37½" to 71" chest measurement. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a classic button-front cardigan with a finished length between 27¼" and 31" depending on size. The cardigan features set-in pockets and a ribbed front neckband, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for both men's and women's styling.

Construction Techniques

The Whist cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed, worked-flat method. All individual pieces are knitted flat on straight needles before being sewn together, allowing for precise shaping and control throughout the construction process. The front and neckband are worked separately by picking up stitches and knitting in ribbing, which creates a polished, finished edge. Pockets are set in during assembly, and the cardigan is finished with seven buttons for closure.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The cardigan is worked primarily in Pattern Stitch, which is knitted using the larger needles and establishes the main fabric texture. Ribbing is used for the front neckband and cuff details, created with the smaller needles to provide elasticity and a refined edge. The pattern requires checking gauge after blocking to ensure accurate finished measurements, with the target gauge being 19 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in the Pattern Stitch using size 7 / 4.5 mm needles.

Materials and Yarn

The Whist cardigan is designed to be knitted with Berroco Lanas yarn, a 100-gram ball weight. Yardage requirements range from 6 to 12 balls depending on the size selected, with the sample shown knitted in size 44¼" using the colorway #9502 Buttercream. The project requires two sets of knitting needles—size 5 / 3.75 mm for ribbing and the circular needle, and size 7 / 4.5 mm for the main pattern stitch. Additional notions include waste yarn for holding stitches during construction and a 40-inch circular needle in size 5 / 3.75 mm for picking up and working the front neckband.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern offers extensive sizing options with finished chest measurements from 37½" to 71" and corresponding length adjustments. The recommended positive ease is approximately 2–4 inches (5–10 cm), allowing for comfortable wear over layering pieces. Sizing is presented as unisex, with any necessary modifications for men's or women's specific shaping noted within the instructions.
