Berroco Zinaida Knit Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Berroco Zinaida is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by Alison Green from the Ginkgo Fall 2017 Collection. This pullover features a sophisticated blend of cable and lace stitch patterns, offering a refined garment suitable for transitional seasons. The sweater is available in seven sizes, ranging from 36" to 60" finished bust measurements, with finished lengths between 22" and 24½". The design includes approximately 3–6" of ease for comfortable wear.

Construction Techniques

The Zinaida employs multiple advanced knitting techniques to create visual interest and structural integrity. The garment utilizes both seamless construction and worked flat methods strategically throughout the design. The sleeves and yoke are worked from side to side in two separate pieces, beginning at the sleeve cuffs and progressing toward the body. This approach allows for precise shaping and pattern alignment. The combination of techniques creates a garment that balances ease of construction with sophisticated design details.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Zinaida incorporates two primary decorative stitch patterns:

  • Cable Pattern: This pattern is worked over 6 stitches and features a classic cable cross created by slipping stitches to a cable needle and holding them to the back while knitting. The cable pattern is provided in two versions—one for flat knitting and one for working in the round—ensuring consistent results regardless of construction method. The pattern repeats every 4 rows, creating a regular, textured cable column.
  • Eyelet Pattern: Worked over 4 stitches, the eyelet pattern creates delicate openwork details through yarn overs and decreases. Like the cable pattern, this stitch is available in both flat and in-the-round variations, with a 2-row repeat. The eyelets add visual lightness and are ideal for incorporating decorative elements such as ribbon threading or creating a lacy aesthetic.

The base fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth, classic foundation that allows the cable and eyelet patterns to stand out prominently.

Materials and Gauge

The Zinaida is designed to be worked in Berroco Ginkgo yarn, a worsted-weight option available in the color #9604 Opal. Yardage requirements range from 6 to 11 balls (50 grams each) depending on size selection. A 29" circular needle in size 8 (5.00 mm) is required, along with spare straight or circular needles of the same size for working sections flat. Additional notions include a cable needle for executing cable crosses, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and waste yarn or stitch holders for securing stitches during construction.

The recommended gauge is 19 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure proper finished measurements and garment fit.
