Blue Sky Fibers Big Splash Poncho
What is Being Made
The Big Splash Poncho is an adult-sized knitted wrap designed by Bobbi Intveld as part of Blue Sky Fibers' Classic Series. This poncho is the grown-up version of the children's Puddle Jumper Poncho and offers a versatile layering piece with multiple size options. Available in Women's S/M, L/XL, and larger sizes, the finished poncho measures 40½" to 65¾" in width depending on size selection, making it suitable for various body types and styling preferences.
Techniques Used
The Big Splash Poncho is worked from side to side in a single continuous piece, eliminating the need for seaming and simplifying construction for knitters. The pattern uses a combination of ribbing and stockinette stitch throughout. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases at the back neck area, creating a comfortable neckline. The poncho is worked flat back and forth using circular needles to accommodate the large stitch count, rather than working in the round. This side-to-side construction method allows for endless color customization, as knitters can easily incorporate multiple yarn colors in sequence or create striping patterns.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches accessible to beginner and advanced beginner knitters. Ribbing forms the foundation, using a repeating pattern of knit and purl stitches (p2, k1 repeat) to create the elastic edge. Stockinette stitch comprises the main body of the poncho, providing a smooth, classic fabric. Decreases are worked using slip, slip, knit (ssk) technique at the back neck shaping to reduce stitches gradually. Increases are created using make one (m1) stitches during the shaping sections. Bind-off is used to secure stitches at the back neck opening.
Materials
The Big Splash Poncho is designed for use with Blue Sky Fibers Sweater Worsted weight yarn, a blend of 55% Superwash Wool and 45% Certified Organic Cotton. This fiber content provides durability, easy care, and breathability. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size (Women's S/M) requires 10 hanks of the main color (A) and 1 hank of the contrast color (B), approximately 1,600 yards and 160 yards respectively. Larger sizes (L/XL) require 12 hanks of color A and 1 hank of color B. The pattern is worked on US Size 8 (5mm) circular needles in both 24" and 40" lengths to manage the large stitch counts. Additional tools include stitch holders or waste yarn for holding stitches, a stitch marker, and a tapestry needle for finishing. The color shown features Chocolate Milk (No. 7526) as the main color paired with Rainstorm (No. 7530) for the ribbed edge.
Gauge
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 16½ stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.
