Blue Sky Alpacas has blended their scrumptiously soft baby alpaca with lustrous mulberry silk to create Metalico. The natural shades of alpaca are undyed, and the silk gives a sheen reminiscent of precious metal. Knit on a larger needle, this gorgeous yarn will make lovely lacey projects with fabulous drape. On a smaller needle, Metalico acts like a sport weight and knits up into a more substantial fabric for light, warm sweaters and hats. A great choice for everyday luxury! Made in Peru.

I really enjoyed knitting with this yarn and I think with the correct project it can really shine. I had originally chosen to knit gloves with it, but it is more of a fancy yarn for shrugs or shawls.

Interestingly, I found this specific yarn very slippery on my needles (I used bamboo too!) and on the ball winder. I found that winding the yarn was a task that should be done very slowly and with care.

Overall and after I changed my project, this yarn draped beautifully in the shawl that knit up and it looks fabulous! I totally recommend it.

When I first received this yarn I was completely obsessed with it. It's the most gorgeous yarn I've ever worked with, but it does have it's imperfections. I knew it was pretty "grabby" becuase when I had to tink back a few sts or rip back a row it wasn't particularly easy to do, but it wasn't until I had blocked my pieces and was ready to seam them tog when I realized how much it sheds and how easily it starts to felt. I have no doubt that after one or two wearings the area under the arms will be completely fused into a mat. I also think this yarn could be sturdier, as it has held up well during the knitting, but I have no clue yet as to how it will wear...I am guessing not too well due to the loose twist and the delicate fibers it's made from.

So, other than all that, this yarn is gorgeous. It is so buttery soft and the sheen and drape are to die for. And the almost metallic colorways are so lovely and natural-looking that this yarn absolutely makes me think of precious metals. It works up well but is so slick I had to use wood needles over metal for the extra bit of grab and control. The sts even out A LOT after wet blocking, and if I were making a showpiece sweater that is to sit up on a manequin this yarn would be the perfect choice, but for anything that needs to hold up to real-life wearing, it is just too delicate and too expensive to be practical. (but I still love it!)

Comments about 16.00 Metalico:

It is great to work with. I am doing a bit of lace on this project and it can split so that's why I like sharper needles. I am using a size 3 needle in stockinette and lace and it is gorgeous.

          Comments about 16.00 Metalico:

Am making a sweater with it; colors should be very complimentary. Love the feel of the yarn to date, it should have a very pleasant drape when the project is done. About the only issue was that I managed to tangle it while rolling into a ball for knitting. The yarn is bad for balling while trying to sort it out, even gently.
Am looking forward to using it soon.

Making a shawl for my sister-in-law. The yarn will drape beautifully as the pattern stated. The only downfall is that it seems to get fuzzies. I will more than likely recommend that this be dry clean only.

          Comments about 16.00 Metalico:

I crocheted a wrap for my daughter for her wedding day. I originally had a more ornate pattern, but discovered that the yarn showed better with a more simple, but still open, pattern. Worked up beautifully, because of the fibers it is slightly "froggy" when ripping out, but a joy to feel. I would not use it for any item that will have excess wear or friction because it is so fuzzy and expensive, but for a wrap it was absolutely beautiful.
