Cascade 220 has been changed- it has something to do with the processing, spinning etc and the company won't explain what has happened. The new style skeins have a dyelot number with 5 numbers and a alpha letter (see example below) vs the old style which had 4 numbers. Since November 2014, it almost impossible to find enough old style (the one with 4 numericals in the dyelot number) to make a sweater. Initially I found the yarn felt different - something to do with the spinning/ plying. It feels like a harder yarn in the hand. There is less loft than old Cascade and it is coarser.

12-30-14: I bought at Webs Cascade 220 (regular not superwash) #4010 (Straw) Dyelot 2K3548, which is the new style yarn - dyelot new style. I swatched it flat on #4 needle and carefully recorded the st ct: on #4 needle I got 25 sts over 4," or 6.25 st/in unblocked. I like to downgauge a little knowing that blocking makes it grow and I like a tighter fabric. I made a cardi in Cascade old style that came out at 5.8 st/in and it is perfect. I have worked up the first skein for the new project - about 4" long, so time for a gauge check.

Unblocked, now getting 25 st over 4" or 6.25 st/in. I blocked a corner of the sweater using my usual method of warm water sponged on, blotted and patted down and let dry.

IT SHRUNK!!!! The 25 st area marked off with thin scrap wool, now measures 3-3/4" which is 6.66 st/in. HOW CAN THIS BE??!!! In all my experience with wool yarn, blocking relaxes the wool and makes it expand. I've never seen it shrink. This means over 308 st the chest measurement will be 46" instead of 49."

WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO CASCADE 220?????

    Comments about Cascade Yarns 220:

Cascade 220 is a work-horse yarn. It is the only yarn I keep on hand in multiple colors for quick projects like hats, doll clothes. It's the perfect weight. Best of all the colors do not vary from dye lot to dye lot. I have made Harry Potter Quidditch sweaters for my niece and sister's dog, tons of hats, a few scarves. It's not the softest, but it wears very well. Simply a great yarn.

I purchased this yarn at my LYS to knit a scarf. I consider myself a beginner since I've not progressed beyond accessories, yet I am confident of my ability to know the difference between one quality and mediocre yarn. I'd consider this a mediocre. My biggest complaint is that this yarn stretches, unravels and is slightly rough. I'd rather spend additional $$$ on quality for considering the time I will spend knitting.
