Cascade 220 has been changed- it has something to do with the processing, spinning etc and the company won't explain what has happened. The new style skeins have a dyelot number with 5 numbers and a alpha letter (see example below) vs the old style which had 4 numbers. Since November 2014, it almost impossible to find enough old style (the one with 4 numericals in the dyelot number) to make a sweater. Initially I found the yarn felt different - something to do with the spinning/ plying. It feels like a harder yarn in the hand. There is less loft than old Cascade and it is coarser.

12-30-14: I bought at Webs Cascade 220 (regular not superwash) #4010 (Straw) Dyelot 2K3548, which is the new style yarn - dyelot new style. I swatched it flat on #4 needle and carefully recorded the st ct: on #4 needle I got 25 sts over 4," or 6.25 st/in unblocked. I like to downgauge a little knowing that blocking makes it grow and I like a tighter fabric. I made a cardi in Cascade old style that came out at 5.8 st/in and it is perfect. I have worked up the first skein for the new project - about 4" long, so time for a gauge check.

Unblocked, now getting 25 st over 4" or 6.25 st/in. I blocked a corner of the sweater using my usual method of warm water sponged on, blotted and patted down and let dry.

IT SHRUNK!!!! The 25 st area marked off with thin scrap wool, now measures 3-3/4" which is 6.66 st/in. HOW CAN THIS BE??!!! In all my experience with wool yarn, blocking relaxes the wool and makes it expand. I've never seen it shrink. This means over 308 st the chest measurement will be 46" instead of 49."

WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO CASCADE 220?????

    Comments about   220:

I got this yarn to make a cardigan. I wish I had chosen yarn with a blend that would drape better than this yarn. It is a little stiffer than I would prefer for a sweater. This is my first cardigan so I am leanring. The yarn was shipped promptly and packaged well.

      Comments about   220:

When I need worsted weight wool at an affordable price, and I need it in certain colors, I keep on coming back to Cascade 220. The quality is very consistent, it is fun to work with, and the results are consistent and very rewarding. I've used it for knitting (great stitch definition!) and weaving (very even fabric!). I've bought it several times with the idea of felting in mind, but usually I like my projects just the way they are, or I steam them, which makes the yarn bloom beautifully while maintaining a nice drape. Yes, you can say this yarn is a staple.

This is my go-to workhorse yarn. If I need something machine-washable, then I'll go for the 220 Superwash. I'm currently making a blanket for an art trade with a family member.
