Blue Sky Fibers Shady Hollow Sweater
Garment Overview
The Shady Hollow Sweater is a women's pullover knit garment designed by Sloane Gillam Lacasse and part of Blue Sky Fibers' Classic Series. This intermediate-level knitting project features a sophisticated construction method and refined aesthetic suitable for knitters with foundational experience seeking a structured challenge.
Construction Method
This sweater is knit from the top down in the round, a modern construction technique that allows for seamless integration of body and sleeve sections. The top-down approach provides significant customization advantages, enabling knitters to easily adjust both body and sleeve length to achieve their desired fit before completing the garment. This method eliminates the need for extensive seaming and creates a more cohesive final garment.
Stitch Pattern and Texture
The Shady Hollow Sweater showcases subtle allover texture throughout the design. The primary stitch pattern used is Tile Rib, which creates visual interest while maintaining a refined appearance suitable for a classic sweater silhouette. This textured ribbing adds depth and dimension to the finished piece.
Yarn and Materials
This sweater is constructed using 100% Certified Organic Cotton in worsted weight. The organic cotton fiber provides breathability, durability, and a soft hand feel ideal for a versatile wardrobe piece. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 5 hanks for smaller sizes (XS-M) to 11 hanks for the largest size (5XL), with each hank containing 150 yards. The color shown in the pattern is No. 80 Bone, a neutral shade that complements various styling options.
Needles and Tools
The pattern accommodates multiple needle preferences to suit individual knitting styles:
- Size 6 (4mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches or longer, or double pointed needles for small circumference knitting
- Size 8 (5mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches or longer, or double pointed needles for small circumference knitting
Needle selection depends on achieving the correct gauge. Additional tools required include stitch holders or waste yarn, stitch markers, a tapestry needle, and waste yarn for the tubular cast-on option.
Sizing and Finished Measurements
The Shady Hollow Sweater is available in nine sizes ranging from Women's XS through 5XL, accommodating bust sizes from 28 inches to 62 inches. Finished chest circumferences range from 34 inches (XS) to 65 inches (5XL). Sleeve length from underarm measures between 11 and 12 inches depending on size, while total length varies from 21.5 inches to 29 inches, allowing for personalized adjustments during the knitting process.
Gauge and Difficulty Level
The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches and 22 rounds over 4 inches when working in Tile Rib using the largest needles (Size 8/5mm) and measuring blocked fabric. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining accurate finished measurements. This intermediate-level project requires solid foundational knitting skills including proficiency with circular needle techniques, ability to work in the round, and understanding of garment shaping principles.
Cast-On Options
The pattern provides flexibility in cast-on methods. Knitters may begin with a tubular cast-on, a refined technique that creates an especially polished edge, or choose an alternate cast-on method of their preference. The tubular cast-on option requires waste yarn and creates a professional-looking finished edge suitable for a classic sweater design.
Pattern Features
The Shady Hollow Sweater pattern includes comprehensive instructions written for the smallest size with larger sizes indicated in parentheses throughout. The yoke construction begins the sweater, with detailed step-by-step guidance provided for the initial sections. The design emphasizes both technical skill development and wearable results, making it an excellent intermediate project for knitters seeking to expand their construction technique repertoire.
