What is Being Made

The Borghild collection features a coordinated set of two knitted accessories: a fitted hat and matching wristlets. This project is part of the Nordic Collection and is designed by Claudia Wersing. The hat is offered in three sizes to fit head circumferences of 18, 19½, or 21¼ inches, with a finished length of 10¼ inches. The wristlets are a single-size design with a 7-inch circumference (unstretched) and 6-inch length, creating a cohesive accessory pairing.

Techniques Used

Both the hat and wristlets are worked using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The hat begins with a cast-on worked in flat rows rather than in-the-round construction, which simplifies the initial setup. The design incorporates charted colorwork or stitch pattern sections that are repeated multiple times throughout the piece. Decreasing stitches is used to shape the crown of the hat, with stitches decreased evenly across rows and then on alternating rows to create a fitted top. The wristlets are similarly constructed in flat rows with ribbed cuffs and charted pattern sections. Both pieces require seaming to join back and side seams during finishing, a standard technique for flat-worked accessories.

Stitches Used

• Ribbing (K1, P1): A foundational two-stitch repeat pattern used for the cuffs of both the hat and wristlets, creating elastic edges that provide a snug fit. Ribbing is worked for 1¼ inches on the hat and ¾ inch on the wristlets.
• Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary fabric used in the main body of the hat after the ribbed cuff section, creating a smooth, classic knit surface.
• Zigzag Pattern: A charted stitch pattern with a 10-stitch repeat (plus 11 stitches total) that appears in both the hat and wristlets. This pattern is worked from a chart and repeated across rows to create textural or colorwork interest.
• Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to shape the crown of the hat, worked strategically before stitch markers to create even shaping.
• Selvage Stitches: Single stitches worked at seam edges and incorporated into the pattern, ensuring clean finishing when pieces are seamed together.

Materials

This pattern requires 2 x 50g balls of Juniper Moon Farm Fourteen yarn in color 12 Oasis, providing sufficient yardage for both the hat and wristlets in any of the three hat sizes. The yarn is worked on US 10/6mm circular needles measuring 31 inches long, which accommodate the cast-on width while allowing flat-row construction. The pattern specifies that LYKKE® needles are recommended for best results. Additional notions include 6 stitch markers used to mark decreasing points during crown shaping on the hat. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches when measured over the zigzag pattern using US 10/6mm needles.
