What is Being Made

The Brindled Wrap is a rectangular knitted wrap designed by Caroline Fryar, featuring finished measurements of 36" x 16" (90cm x 40cm). This accessory combines colorwork and textural elements to create a versatile wrap suitable for layering and styling.

Yarn and Materials

This wrap is knitted using Juniper Moon Farm Findley Dappled yarn in two complementary colors:

• Main Color (MC): 2 balls in color #05 Clear Blue Sky
• Contrasting Color (CC): 1 ball in color #06 Driftwood

The project requires a US 7 (4.5mm) 32"/80cm circular needle, along with stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing. Needle size may be adjusted to achieve proper gauge.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The Brindled Wrap employs two primary stitch patterns to create its distinctive appearance and structure:

Garter Stitch: This foundational stitch creates a reversible, textured fabric and is used for the top and bottom borders of the wrap. Worked in the round, garter stitch alternates between knit and purl rounds to produce the characteristic bumpy texture on both sides of the fabric.

Swedish Weave Stitch: The main body of the wrap features this sophisticated colorwork technique, which creates a brindled or dappled effect by floating the contrasting color yarn across the surface of knit stitches. The Swedish Weave stitch is worked over an 8-round repeat: three rounds of knitting in the main color are followed by a weaving round where the contrasting color is passed in front of and behind stitches to create visual interest. This pattern is then repeated, with the contrasting color positioned oppositely on the second weaving round to build the brindled pattern. This technique produces a reversible fabric with color detail on both sides.

Construction and Sizing

The wrap is constructed in the round using a circular needle, beginning with a cast-on of 289 stitches in the main color. The structure progresses as follows: a 2-inch (5cm) garter stitch border, followed by 12 inches (30.5cm) of Swedish Weave stitch for the main body, and concluding with another 2-inch (5cm) garter stitch border. The pattern notes that the height of the Swedish Weave section can be adjusted to create a taller or shorter wrap according to preference. All stitches are bound off using a sewn bind-off method or another flexible bind-off technique to ensure a stretchy, refined edge.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 30 rows measured over 4 inches (10cm) in blocked Swedish Weave stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements. After knitting is complete, the wrap is finished by weaving in all ends and blocking to the specified measurements, which sets the stitches and enhances the definition of the colorwork pattern.
