Bror Cardigan by Arne & Carlos

What Is Being Made

Bror is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Arne & Carlos and published by Rowan. This garment is available in eight sizes ranging from 81–157 cm (32–62 inches) bust/chest measurement. The cardigan features a structured body with front button closures, utilizing seven brown textured 1.5 cm buttons as fasteners.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Bror cardigan employs several advanced knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. Intarsia technique is used to create the patterned body sections, allowing for the integration of multiple yarn colors in a structured, non-repeating design. The pattern incorporates both stockinette stitch and reverse stockinette stitch within the same design, with all yarn A stitches worked in reverse stockinette and all yarn E stitches worked in stockinette stitch. The garment begins with ribbed edging at the hem and cuffs, providing elasticity and a finished appearance. Strategic increases and decreases are worked throughout the body to achieve proper shaping and fit across the various size options.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbed stitch – used for the initial 24-row ribbed section at the hem and sleeve cuffs to create stretch and definition
  • Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch for yarn E portions of the intarsia pattern
  • Reverse stockinette stitch – used for yarn A portions of the intarsia pattern, creating visual texture contrast
  • Increases and decreases – worked at specific intervals to shape the front panels, back, and neckline

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Bror cardigan is designed to be knitted using Rowan Norwegian Wool, a 50-gram yarn weight. The pattern calls for five coordinating colors from this yarn line:

  • Cloud Dancer 014 – 4 to 7 balls depending on size
  • Golden Nugget 012 – 1 ball for all sizes
  • Ribbon Red 018 – 1 ball for all sizes
  • Daphne 011 – 1 ball for all sizes
  • Peat 019 – 6 to 11 balls depending on size

The pattern requires two pairs of needles in different sizes: 3mm (US 2/3) needles for the ribbed sections and 3¾mm (US 5) needles for the main body. Additionally, a 3mm (US 2/3) circular needle measuring at least 140 cm long is needed for the neckband. These needle sizes accommodate the weight and gauge of Norwegian Wool, ensuring proper fabric drape and stitch definition throughout the garment.
