Camlet Knitted Sweater by Lisa Richardson

What is Being Made

The Camlet is a knitted sweater designed by Lisa Richardson and available in Rowan Fine Tweed Haze yarn. This intermediate-level garment is offered in multiple sizes ranging from 71-76 cm to 152-157 cm chest measurements, with corresponding finished chest measurements from 45 cm to 77¼ cm. The sweater features a structured bodice construction with shaped front and back pieces, including deliberate armhole and front slope shaping for a tailored fit.

Techniques Used

The Camlet employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure. Incremental cast-on shaping is used to gradually build the width of the front bodice, with stitches added in stages at the beginning of alternating rows. This creates a shaped hem and bodice foundation. Marker placement is utilized to denote important construction points, including the base of the armhole opening and the beginning of the front slope shaping. Neck shaping involves casting off groups of stitches at the back neck and decreasing stitches at the neck edge over multiple rows to create a properly fitted neckline. The pattern requires working each side of the neck separately after the initial cast-off to allow for symmetrical shaping on both sides. Stitch decreasing is performed simultaneously with cast-offs during the neck shaping phase to refine the shoulder line.

Stitches Used

The Camlet is constructed primarily using stockinette stitch (abbreviated as st st in the pattern), which is worked throughout the garment beginning with a knit row. This classic stitch creates a smooth, V-textured fabric that showcases the characteristics of the yarn. The pattern also incorporates knit stitches for specific shaping rows and cast-on and cast-off techniques for creating edges and shaping the neckline and armholes.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Camlet is designed to be knitted with Rowan Fine Tweed Haze yarn, available in 50-gram balls. The pattern offers both a 2-colour version and a plain version. For the 2-colour version, the specified colors are Ash (008) and Mist (007), with yardage requirements varying by size from 5 to 9 balls of yarn A and 1 ball of yarn B. The plain version is photographed in Lawn (005). Knitting needles required include 3¼mm (US 3) needles for ribbing and initial construction, and 4mm (US 6) needles for the main body. Circular needles in both sizes are specified—at least 120 cm long—for working larger sections and neckline finishing. The 2-colour version of the sweater requires 7 buttons for closure.
