Cascade Pacific Chunky is the heavier-weight cousin of Pacific. It's the same soft, machine-washable blend of acrylic and superwash Merino wool with a gorgeous sheen, only in a quick-working bulky weight. This is an excellent yarn for this simple textured hat.

Cascade Yarns C Truckee River Hat

What Is Being Made

The Cascade Yarns C Truckee River Hat is a classic knitted beanie designed for easy construction by beginners. This free downloadable pattern creates a fitted, rounded hat available in three sizes: Small (16"-18" head circumference), Medium (18"-20" head circumference), and Large (20"-22" head circumference). The finished hat measures 14", 16", or 18" circumference when unstretched, with heights of 6.5", 7.5", or 8.5" respectively, making it a versatile everyday accessory suitable for various head sizes.

Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques that make it ideal for those new to the craft. The hat is constructed in the round using circular knitting needles, which eliminates the need for seaming. The pattern incorporates ribbed cuffs for a snug, elastic fit around the head. The crown is shaped through a series of strategic decreases that gradually reduce the stitch count, allowing the top of the hat to close smoothly. Knitters transition from circular needles to double-pointed needles (DPNs) during the decrease rounds when the stitch count becomes too small for circular needles to work efficiently. The pattern concludes with a yarn needle weaving technique to secure the final stitches and finish the crown.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K): The fundamental stitch that forms the majority of the hat's fabric
  • Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create the ribbed texture of the cuff
  • Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease stitch used throughout the decrease rounds to shape the crown
  • Purl 2 Together (P2tog): A decrease stitch used in the ribbed sections during the shaping phase
  • Ribbing (K2, P2): A repeating pattern of knit and purl stitches that creates an elastic, textured cuff measuring 1" to 2" depending on size

Materials and Gauge

The Cascade Yarns C Truckee River Hat pattern requires one 100-gram skein of Cascade Yarns Pacific Chunky yarn in color #70 (Classic Blue), which provides 120 yards (110 meters) of fiber. This yarn is composed of 60% acrylic and 40% superwash merino wool, offering a blend of durability and softness with easy-care properties. The pattern calls for US 9 (5.5 mm) circular knitting needles for the main construction and US 9 (5.5 mm) double-pointed needles for the crown decreases. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and securing the final stitches, and one stitch marker to denote the beginning of each round. The recommended gauge is 17 stitches by 32 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) when working in the pattern stitch, ensuring proper fit and finished measurements.
