Product Description
“The sock we return to again and again.” Our mothers (and their mothers) knew this sock by heart, with its vertical heel flap, turned heel, picked up gussets and grafted toe. For many of us, it’s the first sock we learned and our point of departure into the ever-widening world of socks. While we love some of the new approaches, we return again and again to this straightforward, comfy basic.
Churchmouse Studio Basic Sock in Two Gauges
What is Being Made
The Churchmouse Studio Basic Sock is a classic, timeless sock pattern designed for medium adult feet with a finished foot circumference of up to 10 inches (25cm). This pattern offers two distinct versions to suit different yarn weights and knitting preferences: a fingering-weight version and a DK/sport-weight version. The socks feature a traditional construction method that has been passed down through generations, making them an ideal project for knitters looking to master fundamental sock-making techniques or refresh their skills with a reliable, versatile design.
Techniques Used
This sock pattern employs several essential sock-knitting techniques that create a well-fitted, durable garment:
- Vertical Heel Flap: A structured heel construction that runs vertically along the back of the sock, providing reinforcement and durability in an area subject to significant wear.
- Turned Heel: A classic heel-turning method that creates a smooth, fitted heel cup that contours to the foot shape.
- Picked-Up Gussets: Stitches are picked up along the sides of the heel flap and decreased gradually, creating a seamless transition from the leg to the foot and preventing the common "hole" that can form at the gusset.
- Grafted Toe: The toe is finished using a grafting technique (also known as Kitchener stitch), which creates an invisible seam for a smooth, comfortable toe closure.
- Circular Knitting on Double-Point Needles: Both versions are worked in the round using a set of four double-point needles, a traditional method that eliminates the need for seaming.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches that form the foundation of sock construction:
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the sock, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side.
- Ribbing: Used for the cuff to create elasticity and a comfortable, snug fit around the leg. The pattern emphasizes choosing needle sizes that produce springy, resilient ribbing.
- Knit 2 Together (K2Tog): A right-leaning decrease used during gusset shaping and toe decreases.
- Purl 2 Together (P2Tog): A left-leaning decrease used in conjunction with other decreases for balanced shaping.
- Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK): A left-leaning decrease technique that creates balanced decreases when paired with K2Tog.
- Slip Purlwise (Sl pwise): Used to slip stitches without working them, commonly employed in heel flap construction for a neater appearance.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Fingering-Weight Version: This version is designed for traditional fingering-weight yarns and requires approximately 350 yards (320 meters) total. The pattern specifically recommends Cascade Heritage Handpaint (191 yards/175 meters per skein), requiring 1 skein, or alternatively Louet Gems #2 Fine/Sport Weight (225 yards/205 meters per skein). Fingering-weight yarn produces a finer, more delicate sock with excellent stitch definition. This version is worked on US 1 (2.25mm) or US 1½ (2.5mm) double-point needles, achieving a gauge of approximately 32 stitches over 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch.
DK/Sport-Weight Version: This version accommodates slightly heavier yarn weights and requires approximately 275 yards (251 meters) total. The pattern features Rowan Felted Tweed DK (437 yards/400 meters per skein) in Color 175, requiring 2 skeins, or Louet Gems #2 Fine/Sport Weight (225 yards/205 meters per skein), also requiring 2 skeins. DK and sport-weight yarns create a slightly thicker, more substantial sock with excellent durability. This version is worked on US 3 (3.25mm) double-point needles, achieving a gauge of approximately 24 stitches over 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch.
Additional Materials: Both versions may benefit from reinforcing yarn (optional) to strengthen high-wear areas such as the heel and toe. A darning needle is required to finish the sock
