Classic Elite Yarns Abelona Knit Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Abelona is a light and airy summer smock top designed by Kathy North. This intermediate-level knitting project combines decorative lace panels with openwork mesh for a breathable, elegant garment suitable for warm weather wear. The design was originally published in Sunny Day 1402, a printed collection from Classic Elite Yarns.

Construction Method

This sweater is worked using a bottom-up, seamed construction approach. The bodice is knitted flat in rows (back and forth on straight needles) from the lower edge up to the shoulders. After the body pieces are completed, the shoulders and side seams are seamed together. Following this, stitches are picked up along the cast-on edge and the skirt portion is worked in the round to the hem, creating a seamless lower section.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The Abelona features three primary stitch patterns that work together to create its distinctive appearance:

  • Lace Panel: A 16-stitch, 16-row repeat pattern that forms the decorative focal points of the design. This stitch pattern uses yarn overs (yo), knit two together (k2tog), and slip-knit-pass (skp) decreases to create openwork lace motifs. The lace panel combines eyelet decreases and yarn overs to produce delicate, airy fabric with visual interest.
  • Open Mesh Pattern: A 4-round repeat worked in the round that alternates between k2tog and yarn over sequences with plain knit rounds. This creates a consistent, lightweight openwork fabric that contributes to the garment's breathability.
  • Seed Stitch: Included as a supporting stitch, seed stitch is worked over an even or odd number of stitches by alternating knit and purl stitches in each row, creating a subtle textured fabric.

Yarn and Materials

This project is designed to showcase Classic Elite Yarns premium yarns, which are noted for their outstanding quality and brilliant color options. The specific yarn weight and yardage requirements are referenced in the pattern sizing section. Knitters will need appropriate needles for their chosen yarn weight to work the flat sections and circular needles or double-pointed needles for the in-the-round skirt construction.

Pattern Customization Options

The Abelona pattern offers flexibility for fit preferences. If additional bodice coverage is desired, knitters may add an extra 16-row repeat of the Lace panel, which adds 2 inches to the bodice length and 2 inches to the overall garment length. This modification requires additional yarn beyond the base pattern requirements. The pattern is available in multiple sizes, beginning with XS.

Skill Level

This project is rated as Intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with lace patterns and multi-directional construction techniques.
