Classic Elite Yarns Nonatum Lace Tank

What is Being Made

The Nonatum is a summery lace tank top designed by Amy Loberg and originally published in Along The Shore 1503, a printed collection from Classic Elite Yarns. This sleeveless garment is an intermediate-level project that combines elegant lace patterning with a fitted silhouette. The tank is available in five sizes ranging from XS to XL, with finished bust measurements from 28¾ inches to 48 inches and lengths from 20 to 24½ inches.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Nonatum employs a top-down seamless construction worked primarily in the round, which minimizes seaming and creates a smooth, continuous garment. The pattern begins with a neckband worked in the round, after which stitches are bound off to create the straps. The front and back panels are then worked separately back and forth in rows until the armholes are completed. Once the armholes reach their full depth, the front and back sections are joined at the underarm and worked in the round to the lower edge, creating an efficient and elegant construction method.

Stitches and Lace Details

The tank features an allover lace pattern that forms the primary visual interest of the garment. The lace chart is worked with yarn overs and corresponding decreases to create openwork throughout the body. When working the lace chart back and forth in rows during the initial front and back sections, right side rows (odd-numbered rows) are worked from right to left, while wrong side rows (even-numbered rows) are worked from left to right. When the lace chart is worked in the round during the final stages, all rows are worked from right to left. The pattern includes strategic increases worked every right side row at each armhole until the armholes are completed. A ribbed armhole edging provides structure and definition to the sleeveless openings. The neckband features a decorative yarn over and knit two together sequence worked in the round. Additional shaping incorporates make-one increases and purl stitches to create the fitted waist and body shaping, with stockinette stitch used as a substitute when yarn overs cannot be paired with their corresponding decreases.

Materials and Tools

The Nonatum is designed to be worked in Provence by Classic Elite Yarns, a yarn composed of 100% mercerized Egyptian cotton. The pattern calls for 5 to 9 hanks (depending on size) of Provence in colorway 5862 Crushed Violets, with each hank containing 50 grams and 102 yards of yardage. The project requires circular knitting needles in US size 3 (24-inch length), which are used for both the neckband and the in-the-round sections of the garment. The mercerized cotton construction makes this an ideal choice for warm-weather wear, offering breathability and a refined drape suitable for a summery tank top.
