Product Description
Georgia Knit Wrap by Classic Elite Yarns
Project Overview
Georgia is a rectangular knit wrap designed by Tian Foley and originally published in Wrap It Up 1505. This seamless, bottom-up knit project features a sophisticated stitch pattern combined with garter stitch borders, making it an ideal accessory for both warm and cool weather depending on yarn selection. The wrap is worked flat on straight needles and offers intermediate-level knitters an engaging project with visual texture and dimensional interest.
What Is Being Made
Georgia is a rectangular wrap suitable for year-round wear. Two versions are provided using different yarn fibers: a Bella Lino version measuring approximately 16½" wide by 72" long after blocking, and a Fresco version measuring approximately 15" wide by 69" long after blocking. The wrap's generous length and moderate width make it versatile for draping around shoulders or wearing as a shawlette.
Techniques Used
- Bottom-up construction: The wrap begins with a cast-on of 91 stitches and is worked from the bottom edge to the top edge
- Seamless, flat knitting: The entire piece is worked on a single pair of needles without seaming
- Stitch pattern integration: A decorative Crown pattern is centered between garter stitch selvages, creating a defined border frame
- Blocking: Wet-blocking or steam-blocking is recommended to achieve finished measurements and even out the stitch pattern
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Georgia wrap features two primary stitch techniques:
- Garter stitch: Used for the first and last 3 stitches of every row, creating a stable, textured selvage edge, and for the opening and closing rows of the wrap
- Crown pattern: A repeating 8-row pattern worked over a multiple of 5 stitches. Rows 1–4 and 7–8 are knit in garter stitch. Row 5 features yarn overs worked by wrapping yarn around the needle 3 times, creating elongated loops. Row 6 is the pattern's signature row: stitches are slipped purlwise while dropping the extra loops, then returned to the left needle and worked together in an alternating knit-purl sequence (k1, p1, k1), creating a compressed, textured effect
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn options: Two distinct yarns are specified, each producing different drape and finished dimensions:
- Bella Lino by Classic Elite Yarns: Composed of 58% linen, 26% viscose, and 16% cotton. Each 50-gram ball yields approximately 164 yards. The Bella Lino version requires 7 balls in colorway 8504 Sombra and produces a wrap measuring 16½" wide by 72" long. This fiber blend creates a crisp, cool-weather wrap with excellent drape
- Fresco by Classic Elite Yarns: Composed of 60% wool, 30% baby alpaca, and 10% angora. Each 50-gram hank yields approximately 164 yards. The Fresco version requires 6 hanks in colorway 5302 Citrine and produces a wrap measuring 15" wide by 69" long. This fiber blend creates a warmer, softer wrap suitable for cool weather
Needles: US size 6 (4 mm) knitting needles are required, or the size necessary to obtain proper gauge.
Gauge
Gauge is measured over the Crown pattern after blocking. Using Bella Lino, the gauge is 22 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches. Using Fresco, the gauge is 23 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches. While exact gauge is not critical for the wrap's success, variations in gauge will affect yardage requirements and final dimensions. Checking gauge before beginning is recommended to ensure adequate yarn supply.
Construction Details
The wrap begins with a cast-on of 91 stitches and 2 garter stitch rows. The main body is then worked with 3 stitches in garter stitch on each side and 85 stitches in the Crown pattern. This construction continues until the piece measures approximately 68½ inches for the Fresco version or 71½ inches for the Bella Lino version, ending on row
