Product Description
Classic Elite Yarns Wavelength Crescent Shawl
What Is Being Made
Wavelength is a crescent-shaped shawl designed by Rachel Henry and originally published in Forecast 1506. This intermediate-level knitting project features a distinctive construction with a center wedge of lace flanked by garter stitch wings, finished with a lower lace border. The shawl is worked flat in a seamless construction, creating an elegant wrap suitable for layering.
Finished Measurements
The finished dimensions vary depending on yarn choice:
- Alpaca Sox version: Approximately 62 inches wide by 16 inches high
- Bella Lino version: Approximately 70 inches wide by 20 inches high
Techniques Used
Wavelength employs seamless, flat knitting techniques with strategic increases that create the crescent shawl shape. The pattern uses a unique progressive expansion method: each time rows 21–34 of the Body chart are repeated, the marked chart section increases by 14 stitches. This controlled increase allows the red outlined pattern repeat to be worked an additional time with each repetition cycle. For example, after completing row 34 the first time, there are 35 stitches in the chart section; on the second repetition of rows 21–34, there are enough stitches to work the 14-stitch red repeat box twice; on the third repetition, the repeat box is worked three times, and so on. This mathematical approach to shaping creates organic growth within the lace pattern.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:
- Garter stitch for the wing sections on each side of the center chart area
- Lace stitches worked from a charted pattern in the center wedge
- Knit front and back (kfb) increases to shape the shawl edges
- Purl stitches on all even-numbered (wrong side) rows within the chart section
- Stitch markers to delineate the chart section from the garter stitch wings
- Slip marker (slm) technique to maintain pattern boundaries
The Body chart displays only odd-numbered right-side rows; wrong-side rows are worked by purling all charted stitches while maintaining the garter stitch sections outside the markers.
Materials
Wavelength can be knitted in two different Classic Elite Yarns options, each producing distinct drape and finished dimensions:
- Alpaca Sox by Classic Elite Yarns: 60% alpaca, 20% merino, 20% nylon blend; 100 grams equals 450 yards; 2 hanks required. This yarn creates the cooler-weather version of the shawl.
- Bella Lino: A linen blend yarn suitable for summer wear, producing the larger finished dimensions.
The pattern requires needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight and the stitch gauge established by the designer, along with stitch markers to track the pattern sections during construction.
