What is Being Made

The Kildare is a broken rib stitch pullover sweater featuring a center eyelet panel and side body buttons. Originally published in the Emerald Isle 1508 printed collection, this design combines textural ribbing with decorative lace elements for a sophisticated finished garment.

Construction Method

This sweater is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed approach worked flat. The lower back and front pieces are worked separately for the length of the side openings, then joined to work in the round up to the armholes. Above the armhole shaping, the back and front divide again and are worked separately to the shoulders, allowing for precise shaping and button placement along the side seams.

Stitch Techniques and Pattern Details

The Kildare incorporates several key stitch patterns that work together to create visual interest and texture:

• 2 x 2 Rib – A foundational stitch pattern worked over a multiple of 4 stitches plus 2, alternating knit and purl stitches in a balanced rhythm for classic ribbed edges and cuffs
• Broken Rib – An alternating knit and purl pattern that creates a subtle texture, worked over an odd number of stitches in both flat rows and in the round
• Arrow Panel – A decorative lace motif worked over 13 stitches featuring yarn overs and decreases (skp and k2tog) that create an arrow or eyelet design. The panel is provided in two versions: one for working in rows and one for working in the round, with 8-row and 8-round repeats respectively
