What Is Being Made

The Jamberoo is a sculptural infinity scarf designed by Tonia Barry, originally published in Adelaide 1607. This cowl is worked in two identical halves that are joined together to create a richly textured, three-dimensional garment with finished measurements of approximately 66 inches in circumference and 11 inches tall between point tips. The design features deeply textured fabric created through lace patterning, resulting in a distinctive sculptural quality that makes it an elegant accessory piece.

Techniques Used

This project employs knitting worked in the round, a fundamental technique for creating seamless cylindrical garments. The Jamberoo uses the three needle bind-off method to join the two completed halves together with right sides touching and wrong sides facing outward, creating a professional finish. The pattern incorporates strategic stitch manipulation and marker placement to maintain proper pattern alignment throughout the rounds, including techniques for slipping stitches and repositioning markers to keep the lace pattern centered and balanced.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The primary stitch pattern is a Textured Lace chart that forms the foundation of the design. Key stitch techniques include:

• Knit stitches for foundational fabric construction
• s2kp (slip, slip, knit, pass slipped stitches over) – a centered double decrease used throughout the lace pattern to create the sculptural texture and shaping
• Slipped stitches positioned strategically at pattern boundaries to maintain alignment across rounds
• Lace stitches that create openwork and textured elements within the Textured Lace chart

The pattern requires working Rounds 1–16 of the Textured Lace chart, followed by specialized alignment rounds (17–24) that use slipped stitches and decreases to keep the pattern properly centered. The chart is then repeated to achieve the final 38-round total for each half.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This project calls for Adelaide yarn by Classic Elite Yarns, a premium fiber composed of 100% merino. The yarn is worked at a yardage of approximately 123 yards per 50-gram hank, and the pattern requires 6 hanks in colorway 3616 Natural, providing ample yardage for both halves of the cowl.

Needles and additional materials include:

• One 32-inch circular knitting needle in US size 7 (4.5 mm) as the main working needle
• Two spare 32-inch circular needles in the same size or smaller for holding stitches between the two halves
• Stitch marker for marking the beginning of rounds

The pattern notes that if a second 32-inch circular needle in the same size is available, the stitches can remain on the needle rather than being transferred to a spare needle, simplifying the construction process.

Gauge and Finishing

The recommended gauge is 20½ stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches in pattern from the Textured Lace chart.
