Product Description
Classic Elite Yarns Textured Scarf
What Is Being Made
The Classic Elite Yarns Textured Scarf is a lightweight, versatile accessory measuring approximately 7 inches wide by 100 inches long. Designed by Suzanne Shaw and originally published in Spring 2013 in the Handmade Los Angeles II collection, this scarf combines open stitch-work with textured seed stitch sections to create visual interest and dimension. The finished piece is elegant enough for everyday wear while remaining simple enough for relaxed, poolside knitting projects.
Knitting Techniques Used
This scarf is constructed using several fundamental knitting techniques that make it accessible to knitters of easy skill level:
- Bottom-up construction: The scarf is worked from the cast-on edge upward, allowing knitters to easily adjust length as desired during the knitting process
- Seamless, flat knitting: Worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, eliminating the need for seaming or joining
- Lace elements: Open stitch-work sections created through yarn-overs and knit-two-together decreases produce an airy, lacy appearance
- Stitch pattern transitions: The design strategically alternates between different stitch patterns to create textural variety and visual appeal
Stitches Used
The Textured Scarf employs three primary stitch patterns:
- Garter Stitch: Used for the four-row borders at both the beginning and end of the scarf, creating a finished edge with horizontal ridges
- Simple Scarf Stitch: A lace pattern worked over a multiple of four stitches using yarn-overs (yo) and knit-two-together (k2tog) decreases in every row. The pattern repeats as K4, *yo, k2tog, k2; rep from * to end of row, creating openwork sections
- Seed Stitch: An alternating knit and purl stitch worked over an even number of stitches, creating a bumpy, textured fabric. Row 1 alternates K1, P1, while Row 2 reverses to P1, K1, and these two rows repeat throughout
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The pattern calls for Vail by Classic Elite Yarns, a luxury blend composed of 70% baby alpaca and 30% bamboo. Two hanks in colorway 6475 Slate are required, with each hank containing approximately 236 yards and weighing 50 grams. This fiber combination provides both warmth and breathability—the bamboo content keeps the scarf cool and drapes beautifully, while the baby alpaca adds softness and loft to the finished fabric.
Knitting needles in size US 6 (4 millimeters) are used, or the size necessary to achieve proper gauge. The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on stitch pattern: 23 stitches and 20 rows equal 4 inches in Simple Scarf Stitch, while 24 stitches and 34 rows equal 4 inches in Seed Stitch. Checking gauge before beginning ensures the finished scarf meets the intended dimensions.
Construction Details
The scarf begins with casting on 40 stitches and working four rows in garter stitch to create a finished edge. The Simple Scarf Stitch is then worked for approximately 67 inches, establishing the first lace section. Two stitches are increased in the final row of this section, bringing the stitch count to 42 stitches for the seed stitch middle section, which continues until the piece measures approximately 94 inches. The pattern then decreases two stitches to return to 40 stitches and works the Simple Scarf Stitch again for approximately 99 inches total length. The scarf concludes with four final rows of garter stitch before binding off all stitches. Optional blocking and weaving in of ends complete the project.
