Product Description
Classic Elite Yarns Boxwood Sweater
What is Being Made
The Classic Elite Yarns Boxwood is a short sleeve relaxed fit tee with a curved lower edge. Originally published in the In the Garden 1803 printed collection of designs, this garment features a relaxed silhouette intended to be worn with approximately 6 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, loose-fitting aesthetic.
Construction and Techniques
The Boxwood employs a distinctive sideways construction method, with both the back and front pieces worked flat from one side seam to the other. The garment begins with a provisional cast-on using the crochet chain method with waste yarn, allowing for seamless joining of live stitches later in the construction process. This technique enables the designer to shape the garment through strategic increases and decreases that form the shoulder shaping and curved lower edge as the piece is worked horizontally.
After the back and front panels are completed, the live stitches at each side of the lower body are joined together. The remaining armhole stitches from the provisional cast-on are then transferred to double pointed needles, and the sleeves are worked in the round to their ribbed cuffs, creating a seamless transition from body to sleeve.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Boxwood is primarily worked in stockinette stitch (St st) for the main body fabric, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance. The cuffs and ribbed details feature a 1 x 1 rib stitch, worked over an even number of stitches with alternating knit and purl stitches in every round, providing elasticity and a finished edge.
Shaping is accomplished through strategic increases worked on right-side rows. The pattern employs both single increase rows (with one stitch increased inside the lower edge marker) and double increase rows (with two stitches increased between markers), creating the curved silhouette characteristic of this design.
Materials and Gauge Information
This pattern is designed for use with Classic Elite Yarns yarn and requires knitting needles appropriate to the chosen yarn weight. Double pointed needles are necessary for working the sleeves in the round. A crochet hook is also needed for executing the provisional cast-on method with waste yarn.
Sizing and Fit
The Boxwood is available in six sizes with varying stitch counts at the provisional cast-on, ranging from 94 stitches for the smallest sizes to 106 stitches for the largest. The pattern includes detailed row counts and measurements to guide knitters through the shaping process, with finished piece measurements progressing from approximately ¼ inch to 1½ inches at the cast-on edge, expanding to 4¾ to 6 inches as shaping is completed.
