Classic Elite Yarns Harlow Knit Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Classic Elite Yarns Harlow is a drop shoulder pullover sweater designed by Tonia Barry. This intermediate-level knit garment features a distinctive design element: ribs take center stage on a seed stitch base, creating a softly rounded shirttail hem. The sweater is available in six sizes ranging from XS to 2XL, with the pattern shown in size S.

Construction Techniques

The Harlow sweater employs a bottom-up, seamless construction worked primarily in the round, which creates a smooth, continuous fabric with minimal seaming. The lower body is worked in the round to the underarms using a longer circular needle in the larger size. At the underarm point, the piece divides for working the front and back separately in rows, allowing for shaping and customization. The sleeve stitches are then picked up around the armhole and worked downward to the cuff, creating clean armhole edges and a professional finish. This method of construction is efficient and produces a garment with excellent drape and fit.

Stitches Used

The Harlow pattern incorporates two primary stitch patterns that work together to create visual interest and texture:

  • 2 x 2 Rib – This classic ribbed stitch is worked in both rounds and rows. In the round, the pattern repeats as P2, *k2, p2; rep from *. When worked in rows, it alternates between Row 1 (WS): K2, *p2, k2; rep from * and Row 2 (RS): P2, *k2, p2; rep from *. The ribbed sections form the center front and back panels, measuring approximately 1¼" to 1½" in length, with a multiple of 4 stitches plus 2.
  • Seed Stitch – This textured stitch creates a bumpy, even fabric and is used for the side sections of the lower body. In the round, Seed Stitch alternates between Rnd 1 (*P1, k1; rep from *) and Rnd 2 (*K1, p1; rep from *). When worked in rows, it similarly alternates between Row 1 (WS): *K1, p1; rep from * and Row 2 (RS): *P1, k1; rep from *. Seed Stitch requires an even number of stitches and provides a subtle, sophisticated texture that complements the bold ribbed panels.

Materials and Tools

To complete the Harlow sweater, knitters will need Classic Elite Yarns yarn in an appropriate weight for the pattern specifications. The pattern calls for a longer circular needle in the larger size for casting on and working the lower body in the round. Additional needles in the appropriate gauge are required for the transition to flat working when the front and back divide at the underarms, and for picking up and working the sleeves. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, originally published in Mystique 1709A, a printed collection of designs from Classic Elite Yarns.

Pattern Notes

The lower body measures approximately 14½ to 15½ inches from the cast-on edge in the Seed Stitch sections at each side, ending with Round 2 of Seed Stitch. Knitters should note that the ribbed center front and back panels will measure approximately 1¼" to 1½" longer than the Seed Stitch sections due to row gauge differences between the two stitch patterns. This is an intentional design feature and should not be adjusted. The pattern is rated as Intermediate skill level, making it suitable for knitters with some experience in seamless, in-the-round construction and stitch pattern management.
