Classic Elite Yarns Narmin Pullover

What Is Being Made

The Narmin is a classic A-line pullover sweater designed by Tonia Barry. This seamless, top-down knit features a simple silhouette with gently rolled edges, making it an elegant and versatile layering piece. The design is available in six sizes, from XS through 2XL, allowing for a customized fit across a range of body types.

Construction Method

Narmin is worked seamlessly from the top down, beginning at the neck edge. This construction technique eliminates the need for seaming, creating a smooth, continuous garment. The sweater is worked in the round using circular needles, which provides even tension and a polished finished product.

Yoke and Shaping

The yoke is the foundational element of this design. Work begins with a cast-on at the neck edge using a 16-inch circular needle in the smaller size. After working in stockinette stitch for 2 inches, the knitter transitions to a larger needle size. The yoke features raglan shaping, with increases worked strategically to create the characteristic diagonal lines of a raglan sleeve. Increases are worked using m1-l (make one left) and m1-r (make one right) techniques to maintain neat, invisible shaping. The frequency of increase rounds varies by size, with some sizes working increases every round and others working increases every other round or every third round. The yoke is worked until it measures between 7½ and 9½ inches from the start of raglan increasing, depending on size.

Body and Sleeve Division

At the base of the raglan yoke, the piece divides for separate construction. Sleeve stitches are placed on holders, and new stitches are cast on at the underarm using the backward loop cast-on method. The body and sleeves are then worked separately in the round, allowing for independent shaping and length adjustments.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout the garment, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Make One Left (m1-l) and Make One Right (m1-r): Invisible increase techniques used for raglan shaping
  • Slip Marker (slm): Markers are used to denote raglan lines and the beginning of rounds
  • Backward Loop Cast-On: Used to cast on underarm stitches during the dividing round
  • Worked in the Round: The entire yoke and initial body shaping are worked circularly, eliminating seams

Materials

The Narmin is designed to be worked with Classic Elite Yarns yarn. Construction requires circular needles in two sizes: a smaller size (16 inches) for the initial neck ribbing and yoke setup, and a larger size (16 inches initially, transitioning to longer lengths as the piece expands) for the main yoke and body shaping. The pattern specifies changing to longer circular needles as necessary to accommodate the increasing stitch count, ensuring comfortable knitting throughout the project.

Design Details

The Narmin features gently rolled edges, a hallmark of stockinette stitch worked in the round without ribbing. This creates a soft, refined finish at the neckline and hem. The A-line silhouette is achieved through the strategic placement of underarm cast-on stitches and subsequent body shaping, creating a flattering garment that skims the body.
